All I can think of is malware, ...

but so far, I haven't gotten past it.

HP desktop, Athlon dual-core, running XP Pro, x64.
Over several months, system started getting slow, odd failures, other problems. When *any* application opens a file browser, it takes way too long to open any folders, with the flashlight searching. A couple weeks ago, I started getting the persistent "Data Excution Prevention" popup at startup, which can't be shut down. Reboots are taking longer (>3 minutes?) to shut down, then >5 minutes of black screen on startup, before the login prompt appears. No significant disk activity during those times, either.

I spent several hours today, running the malware removal steps, to no avail. I'll attach the log files, in hopes somone can help me!

Oh - SpybotS&D won't run when I launch it. Looks like there's a stuck SpybotSD.exe at 5,080k that will not terminate. All the other removal apps appeared to run OK.

Thanks for any help I can get!

    Dave

I strongly advise you to cleanup your Desktop. Remove eveything but links to run programs. Do not download and save programs here and defintely do not use it for long term storage. You need to keep ComboFix.exe here for now as we need it, but we will be removing it when we are finished with your cleanup. A cluttered Desktop is malware's playground and it can also cause performance degradation especially when you start saving large files here like you are doing.

I am not seeing any malware in your logs. Did you set this:

    Code:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - AutorunsDisabled - (no file)

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\AutorunsDisabled]

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\AutorunsDisabled\{AA58ED58-01DD-4d91-8333-CF10577473F7}]

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\AutorunsDisabled\{AF69DE43-7D58-4638-B6FA-CE66B5AD205D}]

You also need to Run this: Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Plus I am not seeing any Anti-virus program installed.

OK, stipulated! That *is* something I've been needing to do for a long time. Perhaps that's where some of the performance hit is coming from.

Not that I was aware of! What does that all represent?

I thought I had done that as part of the Read & Run.
    Will do [again] immediately...

I did have, but disabled & removed it some time ago, during an earlier attempt to clean up the system. What's your recommendation for AV?

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll clean up some more, and see how it improves things.

Cleaned up 90% of the desktop stuff, and installed PC Tools Antivirus. Re-enabled Windows Firewall.

Still very slow to open folders, but I feel safer...

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Tell me if you get a success message.

    If you do, then:

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They are useful as backup scanners. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)

    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

TimW: Saw your most recent correction steps, will get to them a little later today.
In the mean time, PC Tools AntiVirus threw an error last night. I'll attach a small screen capture.
After the error report was compiled and sent, it (later) popped up the following error dialog:
"PC Tool AntiVirus has encountered an error. Please reboot your PC. If the problem persists, please contact support with error 104"
PCTAV is still resident and running, with IntellieGuard on...

    Are you still having issues?

Yes, still very slow opening folders.
Also, still have "Data Execution Prevention" pop-up that will not close or go away. (Well, it closes, prmits snding Microsoft the error report, then pops back up immediately.)

Am about to execute the further steps you recommended this morning; have been out all day.

I do not think this is malware related.

Try this: go to start / run / type "sfc /scannow" without quotes and note the space. Have your xp cd ready.

    Run it twice.

These errors could be either a hardware issue ( you should do a chkdsk to find out) or a software issue.

Would that I had the XP disk...
What are you expecting the scan to require?

SFC is system file checker and looks for missing or corrupt system files.

You can use any xp disc as long as it is the same version as what you have installed, i.e. home or pro.

But this is something you should pursue this in the software section.
