The machine I'm working on was a total mess but thanks to the tools and steps listed on your help page I have cleaned up most of everything. At first I was blocked from getting to any virus update pages (McAfee,Symantec). McAfee update was blocked from getting to it's update page. The System took approx 4 min to boot up for use. Now the only remaining items I can't fix and need help with are, can't run Windows Update get error msg #0x80070424, can't turn on windows update, and still blocked from getting to Kaspersky on line scanner recommended in your instruction. I ran all the others and cleaned every thing out.

Here is the Hijack this log. If you would please review and give me further directions it would be appreciated.

Please read and follow the directions in step 7 of the READ & RUN ME. HijackThis must be installed and run properly and logs must be attachments to your message. I'll repeat them for you here:

However I do not believe your problems with MS update are from any malware that is still present but it may have been caused by malware. It looks like you have not authenticated your Win XP OS with Microsoft. Until that is done, you cannot get updates. I'm not sure what your probably is with Kaspersky (please explain what you mean by "blocked") but try doing the below.

Also download HOSTER and then follow the below steps.
    • Unzip Hoster to a convenient folder such as C:\Hoster
    • Run Hoster.exe, click Restore Original Hosts and then click OK.
    • Click the X to exit the program

Here is one more item that may help.

    - Copy the below quoted text box into a notepad window
    - Then click File and then Save As. Change the Save as Type to All Files. Name the file IEreg.bat and then click save and save it to your Desktop to make it easy to find. Now "double click" on the IEreg.bat icon on your Desktop to run the program. After doing this, reboot and see it there is any change to running Windows Update.

Sorry I should have been more specific earlier. When I first got the machine from my friend, anytime I tried to get to a web site that was antivirus related including Kaspersky, I received the msg The Page Cannot be displayed, but I could go anywhere else on the internet without a problem. After using several of your tools I was able to get to antivirus sites, only one I couldn't was Kaspersky. I would receive the same The Page Cannot be displayed msg. After running your suggestion of Hoster, that solved the Kaspersky issue. I'm there now running a scan once it's complete I will try your other suggestions to solve the remaining issues.

I know Windows XP has been registered since he has been receiving updates for approx the last year. It's only recently that the Windows update stopped working and Automatic Updates were turned off and couldn't be enabled. All the problems seem to come at once.

Thanks so much for your help so far. If your other suggestions don't solve the problem I will run Hijackthis and Attach the log.

It may have been registered but it has not been validated at Microsoft. This is a fairly new process that must be done for updates to work. When you got to the website it is part of the new procedures that will have to be followed (only one time). A new line will actually show in a HijackThis log indicating this.

Let me know the results of trying the steps!
