Am I clean from Vundo?

    Hello,
Four days ago my computer got taken over by, it seems like, a host of malware. (I knew I should have kept my McAfee subscription going . . . )

I did the steps on the Malware Removal Guide. I also downloaded Symantec Virus scan. Computer seemed to run a little better this morning and I didn't get annoying popups, although it seems a bit laggy.

But ... Symantec said it detected the Vundo virus. I then downloaded Vundofix from these forums and ran it. When I restarted computer, it wouldn't reboot. A message kept scrolling across screen that it couldn't find harddisk 2? So I had to reboot to a previous safe startup.

Attached are my logs. I installed all the utilities in c:/Spyware Tools/ , not in the Program Files subdirectory. I hope that doesn't mess things up.

Thank you for any help ... you all are awesome!

    Here are my other logs. I hope I didn't forget anything . . .

    Thank you so much!

    Welcome to Major Geeks!
Yes you forgot to attach the requested log from CounterSpy. Please attach it!

This is a bad idea! Always install programs into their recommended default folders as per the installation program. For programs not having a true installation program (like GetRunKey and ShowNew), install them to the folder recommended in the download link. It is best to never mix multiple programs into one folder or you risk the chance of overwriting similarly name files and thus breaking the program or worse, making it behave improperly.

Also when you install all programs into a folder like you did with CounterSpy, how do I have you easily remove things from CounterSpy after we uninstall it. I would normally say delete the C:\Program Files\Sunbelt CounterSpy folder which would easily remove it. But if I say remove C:\Spyware Tools, it would delete all things you put into that folder and not just CounterSpy.

And finally when programs are not installed into their default folders, they look like malware imposters when seen running since they are not running from the expected locations. This will confuse malware removal.

Now onto your malware cleanup. You have a lot remaining including Vundo, PurityScan, a Trojan Downloader, MyWay, Deluxe Communications, Viewpoint and more.
    1. First download this file - combofix.exe
    2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Attach this log to your next reply
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now uninstall the below old versions of software:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
Frontier Browser Assistant <-- should have been uninstall in step 0 of the READ ME
Frontier Search Helper <-- should have been uninstall in step 0 of the READ ME
Viewpoint Media Player <-- should have been uninstall in step 0 of the READ ME

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines.
But DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is
set to "all files" Once you have saved it
double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog
46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
After reboot, install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. ComboFix
    2. Avenger
    3. GetRunKey
    4. ShowNew
    5. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and
re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

Here are the rest of the logs. I tried to follow everything in order.

I have no popups. System seems to be running faster than ever when browsing online. I think things are working so far!

Thank you so much for your help,

    Bernie

Okay uninstall CounterSpy now since we are finished with it.

Then delete the below two folders:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Bernie\Application Data\Viewpoint
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sunbelt Software

Also delete the below malware file:
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\jmhmdcmb.ini

Now attach a new log from ShowNew so I can be sure no more malware files showed up.

    Hi Chaslang,
Okay, I deleted the first folder and the malware. I'm actually thinking of buying the CounterSpy software, so I didn't delete it. It is a good program to invest in?

My system seems to run much faster now, and, no more popup windows. Thank you so much for your help. I think I am on the right road now.

However, whenever Symantec runs, it detects the Trojan.Vundo and says I should reboot to finish the deletion process. Then when Symantec does a scheduled scan again, there Trojan.Vundo is again.

    Attached is a Shownew log.

Your log is clean but I do have a question about some folders I see.

Please tell me what is in the below folders and also do you recognize them?
    Code:
    "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\"
    POG May 24 2007 "pog"
    T1QASQ May 24 2007 "T1QaSQ"
    T3 May 24 2007 "T3"
    T6 May 24 2007 "T6"
    T8 May 24 2007 "T8"
It is a good program. Some people feel it slows there boot time down too much and also it slows general PC performance. However any protection software will have this effect. It is a necessary evil. If you like it, then buy it.

Perform ALL of my final steps given below, and then tell me if you still have this problem (I would bet not).

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, and the C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    5. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    6. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    7. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    8. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    9. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Hi Chas,

I checked these folders and they are all empty. I don't know what they are:
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\"
    POG May 24 2007 "pog"
    T1QASQ May 24 2007 "T1QaSQ"
    T3 May 24 2007 "T3"
    T6 May 24 2007 "T6"
    T8 May 24 2007 "T8"

I deleted Combofix, Vundofix, Avenger, ShowNew, GetRunkey and their related files.

I turned off System Restore, rebooted, and turned it back on.

Ran a quickscan with Symantec and it came up clean.

I think we did it! Thank you so much. You folks are awesome.

I don't know if anyone else will read this, but to anyone who is fighting a malware attack, follow the Major Geeks instructions -- to the letter. I got a bad case of malware on Friday. I researched the web and took haphazard stabs at trying to delete it. It kept coming back. I was at my wits end and ready to reformat the harddisk. Luckily I found this site and, with nothing to lose, I did the steps "READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide". I'm not a computer geek -- I had to print it out and check off each step in pencil. (Although I'm feeling a little geeky now :major ). Chaslang guided me through the rest.

The computer got progressively better each day. It's Tuesday.. it took five days, but now I'm clean.

I guess my message to anyone frustrated as I was by this is: Hang in there. Do the steps. Print them out, check them off as you do them. It will take awhile, but they work.

My computer is faster than ever, and I got a few handy utilities. Thanks again!

    Bernie

    You're welcome!

Okay I suggest you delete them since they are empty.
