My son's computer is a Dell running XP Media Center with SP3. A couple of weeks ago he started getting ad popups after he clicked on a popup about antispyware stuff (he doesn't remember the name). At the time, I was running Norton 360, Spybot S&D and SpywareBlaster with all latest updates from Microsoft. After researching malware stuff, I removed Norton and installed Avira's Antivir Personal, CCleaner, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (mbam), SuperAntiSpyware (SAS), Windows Defender, Lavasoft's Ad-Aware, and Comodo's firewall. Antivir found no infections, but mbam, SAS and Spybot found problems & fixed them. When I did online antivirus scans, I got reported infections from Kapsersky, Panda ActiveScan, BitDefender, and F-Secure. The F-Secure scan said there were 3 infections of Vundo.gen38. I ran HijackThis and could not detect any of the symptons of Vundo, but I still got infections reported from F-Secure, Panda and Kaspersky. I ran SDFix, SmitFraudFix, Vundo Fix and VirtumundoBegone. I still got infections reported from F-Secure, Panda and Kaspersky. I ran MajorGeeks Windows XP Cleaning Procedure (including ComboFix and MGtools) last night. I ran F-Secure's online scan this morning and it says I have 4 infections of Vundo.gen38.

Is this computer clean? I've attached the logs per instructions. Is this computer OK, should I take additional steps with tools or should I just reformat and install XP? Thank you for your help.

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

Also delete all files in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Temp

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

Be sure to tell us how things are running.

TimW - Thank you for your help. I followed your instructions and the only problems I saw were that the Avenger log listed three (3) errors deleting files:
Error: "C:\WINDOWS\TWFyayBBbmdlbG8" is a folder, not a file!
    Deletion of file "C:\WINDOWS\TWFyayBBbmdlbG8" failed!
Error: "C:\WINDOWS\zzwk" is a folder, not a file!
    Deletion of file "C:\WINDOWS\zzwk" failed!
    Error: "C:\Program Files\Common Files\zzwk" is a folder, not a file!
    Deletion of file "C:\Program Files\Common Files\zzwk" failed!

I've attached the Avenger logs and the MGlogs.zip.

Is my computer clean? Should I do anything else? My sincere gratitude for your help!

    Your logs look clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

1 If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop & renamed it like we requested.)

    * Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
    * "%userprofile%\Desktop\cf" /u
o Notes: The space between the cf" and the /u, it must be there.
o This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    * Delete the C:\cf folder from combofix.
2 *If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
3 *If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    6. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
    * Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
    * Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    7. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
How to Protect yourself from malware!

Yes you can uninstall avenger....though you may wish to keep Malwarebytes and Super-Antispyware as back up scanners.:)

Thank you. I have one last question (I apologize if this should be a separate thread).

I followed the instructions from "How to Protect yourself from malware".
I also have other anti-malware SW installed.
Below is what I'm running Do you recommend any changes?

    Avira's Intivir Personal
    Comodo's Firewall Pro
    Comodo's BOClean
Spybot S&D (Is it bad to have TeaTimer on with everything else?)
    Spyware Blaster
    MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
    Microsoft's Defender
    Lavasoft's Ad-Aware
    SuperAntiSpyware
    MVPS Hosts
    IE-Spypad
    CCleaner
(I tried a-squared per instructions but since removed it)

I also updated Sun Java, Adobe Reader & Flash; created restricted accounts with passwords; updated setting in IE7; and reset system restore.
Am I missing anything? Is this too much; should I get rid of anything?
I'm running this set-up on five (5) home computers so I'd like to get it right.
    Any other recommendations?
Thank you again for all your help; I sincerely appreciate it.

As long as you have only one anti-virus program running real time protection....

I'm not familiar with IE-Spypad...so can't comment. The rest can be used as backup scans, though I would turn off Tea-timer and probably remove Microsoft Defender.
