    Hi, the advice and guides on this forum has been excellent so far so hopefully someone can help some more. I had a fresh install of XP professional (now with SP3) on my PC last week and spent some time downloading all the programs I had lost. Along the way I obviously got some Malware as strange messages kept appearing.
    Mainly I got the message "number of secrets has been exceeded" (or something along those lines) which brought me here. I am running AVG8.5.325 and it found many trojans etc so I have completed the Malware cleaning guide as listed here.
    SuperAntiSpyware I had to install from and then run from different folders to get it to work but it did and log is attached.
    Malwarebytes Anti-Malware installed but clicking the EXE icon or running the program from the start menu had no effect. I left it until later
    Combofix I ran, log attached.
    MGtolls I ran, no problem, log attached.
    Then after re booting I tried Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and this time it ran, again log attached.
    Have only tried PC for a few minutes but would appreciate knowing if you think my PC is now Malware free or is there something else I now need to do?
    Thanks again for all your help - this rreally is an informative site!
    Cheers, Liam.

    1. You had signs of a DNS hijacker infection that has mostly been removed. The infection you have is known to infect router hardware. If you have a router hooked up then you need to follow the instructions for your hardware and reset it to factory default settings. Normally there is a recessed push button type switch that needs to be held down for some number of seconds to do this. After resetting to factory defaults on your router, you will need to reconfigure the router for your network if you have made any changes to the default network setup. After doing this, continue with on with the below.

    Download HostsXpert and then follow the below steps.

    • Unzip HostsXpert.zip
    • It will create a folder named HostsXpert in whatever folder you extract it to.
    • Run HostsXpert.exe by double clicking on it.
    • Click the Make Writeable? button. (if you only see a Make Read-Only selection, it is already writeable so skip this button).
    • Click Restore Microsoft's Hosts File and then click OK.
    • Click the X to exit the program

    2. Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    . Let's use ComboFix to remove some malware.

    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it
    (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:

    KILLALL::

    File::
    f:\recycler\S-1-5-21-8437504844-8937514645-009269599-4309\rundll32.exe

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{d7413bb7-3a49-11de-a6dc-806d6172696f}]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon]
    "Taskman"=-

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3014/3035535531_512f04c6a2_o.gif
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Use windows explorer to find and then right click and choose properties and tell me what is there:
    f:\windows\gdrv.sys

    Now please do this:
    Disabling AutoRuns

    4. Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Combofix

    5. Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now.

    Hi Kestrel, sorry for the delay, I didn't realise you had got back to me! Everything seems to have been running OK since the clean-up procedure but I have followed your steps as outlined above and my two log files are attached.

    Cheers, Liam.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
