I have an amd athalon 2700+, and it seems to be running very hot. Is this a normal temp for this CPU? I have experienced some freezing occasionally, may not be related though.

Just wanted to add that I have 2 case fans(one is sucking air in from the front, and the other is blowing air out the back) I also have a dual fan power supply(ENERMAX 420). Other fans include the cpu fan and the graphics card fan(ALLINWONDER 9800 pro).

Is the CPU temp at load? what is your room temperature? what is your CASE temperature?

This is at idle temp, I have very little running. The room temp is 23C. I am going to take the case cover off and see how much it drops.

Also what would be a good normal running temp for this cpu?(2700+)

This is what it reads after I had the case open for 5 mins, its fluctuating between 56-57 c. Havnt seen it go lower then that.

I am not sure where to looks for 'thermal grease', never heard of such a thing...please be more specific on this. 10 degrees sure would be an improvement.

ok doesnt seem to hard, looks like 2 clips holding it together.

ok I will look into lower that voltage thru bios.

    Thanks for the tips.

I checked th grease and there defienatle is some there, but its minimal and kinda dry to the touch(maybe thats normal)
I dont have any extra on hand, so I will go buy some and apply it.

Also dont really want to mess with the voltage, its set on auto, so it should be fine.

put it on normal or standart ..
and make sure that the cooler or HSF is seatin right on the cpu .. attached 100% the the board ..
and also think about updatin your bios .. I did that and it fixed it abit :)

alright..so in the bios its set at normal now, and I applied some thermal grease. The temp is now sitting closer to 57c.
This is at idle. Is there anything else I can do to get it lower?

Look at a bios update. Its possible those temperatures aren't accurate. My motherboard was like that.

AMD has a strong preference for thermal (phase-change) pads. They're greyish in colour and feel dry (and slightly waxy) to the touch. It sounds like you found a thermal pad.

A primary objective for the use of thermal interface products is to ensure that there is absolutely no air between the CPU chip and the heatsink face. (It's a lousy heat conductor.) For that reason, thermal pads shouldn't be re-used. If the heatsink is removed from the CPU after it's been used, a new pad has to be applied. Whether you're replacing the pad or installing thermal grease in its place, ALL of the old pad must be removed and the mating surfaces carefully cleaned.

If you haven't been careful to do all of that, you might want to have a look at Arctic Silver's instructions for installing thermal grease -- then re-do the job. You may be able to bring your CPU temperature down quite significantly.

Assuming that your BIOS is correctly reporting your CPU temperature, you should be able to get it into the low 40s Celsius at idle. Some have reported temps in the high 30s.

It may be a little late now -- but if you don't use the thermal interface products recommended by AMD, you may no longer have AMD's warranty. Check here for AMD's recommendations.

Yes I applied artic silver according to the site. I am still getting 58. Looking into a bios update, not sure where to start with that, but today I am making it my goal.

Ok I finaly got the update for my bios, and yes it was outdated. I had F5 and the newest was F11, so I was alot behind. Its done now and confirmed, but my temp is still over 60C.

    Temperatures
    Motherboard 39 °C (102 °F)
    CPU 62 °C (144 °F)
    Aux 38 °C (100 °F)

    CPU 3125 RPM

    Voltage Values
    CPU Core 1.73 V

    +5 V 4.27 V
    +12 V 12.35 V
    +5 V Standby 4.78 V

Anything else I might be able to do to reduce the heat on the cpu? Obviously something is going on here I cant figure out.

Some suggestions (in case you haven't already tried them):
    • Check the temperature rise within the case. If it's more than 7C, move more air through the case and past the HSF.
    • cut a hole in the side of your case and add a short duct so that the fan on the heatsink can get cool air directly from outside the case.
    • upgrade the heatsink/fan -- but make sure whatever you install is "approved" by AMD if you want to be sure of keeping your AMD warranty in force.
    • make sure that the air going into the case is as cool as possible.
    • review AMD's white papers on the topic -- see here

hey, I'm new here, but I wanted to throw in that I was having some heat issues and some thermal compound from Radio Shack(properly installed) dropped my cpu temp about 4-5 degrees C. My Athlon 2800+ is idling at 28-31 C.

Is your heatsink full of dust and junk? If so, spray it out with some canned air!
