I'm wondering what the socket type of the AMD 3100+ (1.8 ghz) is and what AMD processor models are compatible with it (speeds over 1.8 ghz of course). I'm looking to upgrade the processor in my older XP media box.

Check to see what your motherboard supports. Sounds like you have an 'off the shelf' machine which doesn't bode well for you. Might not be worth it even if you could find faster chips. Use Everest to find that out.

The AMD 3100+ (1.8) if its a Sempron processor, the socket is 754... as stated above, check your mobo manufacturer's site for compatible processors.
