Excellent idea for gamers, and other "one at a time" heavy applications. Dual core currently does little for gamers.

This is an example of what competition does, and explains why Windows isn't as good as it should be, because it doesn't have any real competition.

Doesn't have much to do with Windows; more of a hardware issue for non-threaded applications like games. Even if the OS handles multi-cpus properly, if the software is not written to take advantage of it, it uses only one core/cpu. Which wastes a lot of cpu capability for most games and most current software. AMD's solution helps the applications directly, regardless of the OS. Game development takes a lot of time, and new features don't show up immediately. Only a VERY few games currently support dual core, even if the OS does.

    That's not what I meant.

I used Windows as an example, because it doesn't have any real competition.

Competition drives development, with rivals trying to outdo each other.

Micro$$oft doesn't have any major rivals, whereas AMD and Intel are in a neck and neck race trying to outdo each other so they gain market dominance.

(shrug) Competition is always a good thing, just didn't see what Windoze had to do with hyper/anti-hyperthreading. While their OS doesn't have much competition, Firefox's encroachment into their market share has kicked them in the butt to finally improve IE, and all the other media players/shopping/download software like I-Tunes no doubt inspired much of WMP11. Every little bit helps. ;)

Windows has nothing to do with hyperthreading, it was just an example I used to illustrate my point.

Which is, Intel and AMD are fiercely competitive, which is why technologies like this appear.

Same thing applies to video card and motherboard manufacturers, which is why they move at the speed they do.

Micro$$oft however, doesn't have any competition, which is why Windows isn't as good as it could be.

this is what i understand in competition:
    consumer gets the best

like what you are making now
    competing in information you know
    the reader gets the idea

    BTW, thanks

    Microsoft and a Halter Top

What do Microsoft and a halter top have in common?

    Both offer very little support!

If Microsoft Was Looking for Drivers

If Microsoft built cars you would need to restart your car, then it would perform illegal operations and crash.

So now a person can't use something unless they agree with everything and think it's perfect?

    *vomits repeatedly*

Reason I use it, because I like playing games and having the largest possible range of applications that are compatible.

That doesn't make Micro$$oft perfect, it just means unfortunately that they are the only ones who meet my requirements.

    What else would you suggest?

LOL. "Meets the requirements" is why everybody uses it. Which in reality, makes it "best" for most people. Perfect, no, but best out there. You just like griping. I swear, if somebody gave you a thousand dollars, you'd gripe because the bills were wrinkled. ;)

    I would suggest Windows.

A perfect operating system? No such thing will ever exist - and I never suggested there was such a thing either. It's just annoying how many people rip at Windows, yet sit back and use the software quite happily.

Then again, I am a fan of Microsoft - even though it's not "cool" to admit to that.

I would suggest you read my posts from the start and understand what I said.

I don't expect or ask for perfect.

My original point was that if there was more competition, Windows would be better.

I didn't say it was awful, or I wanted perfect.

It doesn't make it the best, it makes it the only one.

Last time I checked, my games and programs (and that's what most people do with a PC) wouldn't run and aren't supported by Mac or Linux.

What else would you suggest as you seem to think there is a huge choice?

(I know someone will post telling me there are virtual Windows programs for Linux, but they are buggy at best)

Thing I have against Windows, they have the ethics of a pit bull. They have been nailed repeatidly ripping off other people code (not just the ideas, the actual code), but are hyper sensitive when someone does it to them, or just wants to know how they did something to write decent applications.

Actually I think I just insulted pit bulls. They may be mean and nasty, but you know where you stand.

I use Windows for the applications, but I'm rooting for Linux. If the developing nations actually start using Linux as their standards it may take off.

What I find amazing are the people who think I and others have a choice.

What choice is there? Windows, Mac or Linux.

Linux and Mac don't have the driver, game or program support, so that leaves Windows.

    Wow, what a choice.

That's like a car salesman telling you that you have a choice of 3 cars, but on two of them the motor doesn't run.

But hey, you still have a choice of 3, stop griping and complaining.

I never suggested there was a better, or a huge choice. And it's not just Windows, and not just this thread. You seem to see mainly the worst in most things, and look for opportunities to bring them up. Such as this thread. Had nothing to do with Windows, good or bad. Must be a miserable way to live. I hope something really good happens in your life to cheer you up some.

No wonder the lounge is boring and dead.

The lounge is supposed to go off topic.

If every post stuck to the original topic, it would be even more boring.

Are you trying to tell me that you always stick to the topic? Yeah, right!

Anyway, nothing stopping people from going back to the original discussion.

And BTW, it was you and your mate who harped on about Windows by misunderstanding, misquoting and misrepresenting me.

That's what forced me to repeatedly try to explain my position.

What makes you think you know me, and how dare you assume my life is miserable?

Just because I don't agree with your Google searches and quotes, and have the audacity to post my opinion, doesn't mean I'm inferior to your superiority.

You don't know me, so don't judge me.

If more people took part in discussions, and voiced their opinions, the lounge would be far more enjoyable.

It's almost dead, what's wrong with going off topic and having a lively intelligent debate?

Your original post stated the obvious - if Windows had competition it would be better. Of course it would. If ANYTHING had competition it would be better, 9 times out of 10. The 1 out of 10 being the 'break' of the make or break situation.

Why you launched so obviously into Windows is pretty much beyond me.

I never said it made Microsoft perfect either, by the way.

You complain of Windows not having any competition - why don't you go and join Linux and find out how to run these games and find out how to run games that aren't buggy - a lot of the virtual Windows programs work fine when you know how to use the machine properly.

You expect to sit around on Windows and just magically wait for a rival to appear out of nowhere. I wonder what would have happened if Linus Torvalds had of taken the same mentality...

You're somehow putting blame on Microsoft because they don't have any rivals - surely that is the fault of the other O/S creators?

The fact is, for now and for many years - no one has been able to touch Microsoft at all - the people on Linux are wrapped up in their own little world and think that Linux is better than Microsoft - but, it'll take one hell of an operating system to surpass all that Windows has done for computing in the last decade or more - and I think that is something that people blatantly ignore when talking about Windows.

I would have thought that people like you (those seeking an alternative) would be happy that Windows aren't being pushed to their limit by competition - if they're making bad O/S', then it's giving Linux and Apple a chance to catch up and reclaim more and more people for their side.

Linux, although I believe it'll take at least another 7 years or so is slowly becoming more and more popular and will be in the same scale as Windows operating systems eventually - should things continue the way they are.

If Windows are making poor operating systems and are still miles, and miles, and miles, ahead of the competition - what would happen to the competition if Microsoft went all out (pushed themselves to the limit) and made an operating system better than any made before that - it would probably put an end to Operating System choice altogether.

I use an E-Mac in college and I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised to see how efficient it is. It can run apps. with ease, that a 1.25Ghz 1Gig PC would have trouble dealing with at the best of times.

However, in general I'm not a fan of the layout and structure of them. I am perhaps too close to Windows - but it seems a lot more tidier on here and sorted (I run Classic windows) - where as at Apple - everything seems to be about how something appears on the screen.

Over-eagerness in the graphical element of Apple would be a criticism from myself - although to others it could be a huge plus point of using a Mac, just preference really.

Cool video - The exploding pile technique seems like the most easy to use version - although I'm not sure I would be craving a tool like that - I'm happy with the way things are - although the option is always good.

Allowed to, not supposed to. Some serious threads in the Lounge have been chided for being innapropriate for going wildly off-topic, but in general, off-topic is fine and normal.

    Of course not.

Your original post didn't make it real clear why you were introducing Windows into a hardware comment. You cleared that up.

Well, nothing "forced" you, but clearing up questions about what you meant is normal; we all do that from time to time.

All I know is what you post, and a lot of that is about how bad things are. If you're having a great life and a great time, you haven't shared much of that with us.

Has nothing to do with inferiority/superiority, just with attitude and outlook. Yours just seems to be weighted more to the grim side of life than most.

No, I don't, other than what you say here. Maybe you have a great life and just like playing devil's advocate to stir things up and keep it lively. If so, have fun doing it and enjoy your life.

Nothing wrong with that at all, withing reason. Threads that get so lively that they get angry tend to get shut down, but that's a secondary issue. Would be better most times to simply start a new thread if you've got a new topic to discuss, but there's no hard and fast rule about that. Threads, like real conversations, tend to wander around.

ALL of us, intentionally or not, draw opinions from what we see and hear. And here, all we know is what we see. If my opinion is wrong (it's certainly not sacred), I apologize for misunderstanding, and hope you're having a great life. You just haven't shared many (any?) of the good parts with us.

But you do definitely tend to help keep things lively. ;) :)

Why don't you go and learn how to use Windows or Linux instead of complaining?

Wow, thanks for that. I can see where I erred.

I've only been using a PC for about a month and don't know much.

I'd better start learning. Thanks for the advice, I look forward to the day when I'm as skilled as you. :)

Good to see what you've actually argued your case against mine and not reverted to sarcasm to reflect everything and thus avoid every point I brought up. <-- That's sarcasm as good as, if not better than your own.

Instead of suggesting Windows - I would suggest dropping the 'everyone is out to get me' attitude which you've clearly taken onboard.

It's only a bit of fun.

One technology I'm looking forward to are the PhysicsX cards from Ageia.

Only a few companies like BFG are selling them at the moment.

However, if they take off, are supported by game programmers, and even do a fraction of what they promise, they would be awesome.
