I was going through my regular security routines and I was unhappy with system performance I keep running scans but find nothing even with the definitions. I wasn't having a serious problem but rather just alittle tight on RAM performance. I was curious about the various processes running in RAM. So I was using the search function of the google taskbar and the following website: http://www.liutilities.com/ to find the purpose of processes and while windows has the latest patches I found this in the process list: http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/nvcpl/ it is supposidly a security risk. But my question is this how reliable is the website I am making backups of my process list via msconfig in case the worst happens...

It is a valid and useful website! However like any website their information is not always perfect and if you don't read and interpret everything properly you could take an incorrect action. Many processes can be both good and bad. It is a matter of where they are running from. The downside of LIU is that they make no reference as to where the good files should be located. Thus there are time where you could look at their info and they tell you it is a valid Windows process and this could be wrong because it is not running from the correct location.

There are many useful sites like this but you just need to take a little care and also need some knowledge of the Windows OS's and also of the applications that exist to run in Windows.

    Another useful link is: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/filedb/

They often make better recommendations as to whether you should keep something running then LIU does. Not all processes are malware but many of them just are not needed at runtime. Bleepngcomputer is just better at recommending that you not waste resources on certain processes.

For the nvcpl.exe process you mentioned, here is how Bleepingcomputer dicusses it:

Note: MSconfig is not a backup utiltity!

I'm trying to install Service Pack 2 and I get about 25% of the way there and it'll come up with a error message saying "Unable to read from or write to the database." And then it'll tell me the SP2 installation did not complete. Is it trying to tell me my system files are corrupt? It says this right after creating a restore point and backing up all the system files...

Questions about installing SP2 belong in the Software Forum; however, you do need to be sure that you have no malware on your PC before trying to update to SP2.

You can also check out info in this link which has a fixdb.bat file:

    http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm#Cannot_install_Service_Pack_2

Other than the above, if you still have problems installing SP2, you should post in the Software Forum.
