thought i would share this deadly female we found in the back yard a couple of day's ago, don't know how well the picture will turn out so here's hoping.for those who don't know this is a female Sydney funnel web spider.Australia's deadliest spider raring up ready to pounce, one bite from this and its light's out nobodies home.

WOW! That is a great pic, iwunderdownunder :eek! Looks like that one means business, too. I have heard of them, but first time I had seen a pic of one. I did see one from Afghanistan that was pretty cruel too.

Just one bite, eh? That is pretty darn lethal! Stay clear of that one!;)

yeah TeeCee its some thing you don't want to bump into without any solid shoes on and it makes me a bit uneasy finding it in my back yard.by rule of thumb where there is one there is more and its the first one i have found here in the 8 years i have lived here.both male and female can kill you but the female is far more potent than the male.the venom from one female bite can kill up to 18 adult males, she is definitely one of the worlds most deadliest spiders.that's the downside of living here in oz if the sharks and crocks don't get you the bugs or snakes will.

She looks evil! However, I had to comment on the thread title because I'm me. ;) I thought you were asking if we were afraid of something out of its own time rather than about a spider! LOL

I assumed he meant this, arachnophobic. But you gotta remember he's from down under and they may spell this differently.:-D:-D:-D

Yowsers! Glad we only get Red Backs, (Black Widows), here. Funnel Webs have been known to even bite through shoes.

(Yep, it;s still spelled 'arachnophobia(ic)' down under. ;)). Unless iwunder's talking about fear of anachronisms.LOL

oh dear sorry for the misspelling as you probably can figure out i am not that well edumacated but anyway i will get over it.
no brandy i didn't stomp on it as they are know to jump and they don't run away like most spiders they stand their ground so i KO'D it with a long handled shovel.and also thanks for the info i always thought that the female was the most potent, you learn something new every day.
and by the way i only went to year 8 in high school that's aged 15 due to family reasons i had to drop out young.but it happens.

I would think if you live capture it you could sell it for making the antivenom.

Just be sure to pick it up by its HIND legs! :-D:-D:-D

no unfortunately you can't sell them but we do have voluntary drop of places if you want to catch them and hand them in.there was a situation here locally a few years back when a lady found up to fifty of them in and around her swimming pool.this is the first time i have been up close and personal with one myself.this is the time of the year that they wonder around looking for a mate and with the humidity and wet weather we have had of late provides a good environment for them.

Nasty critters - I remember seeing a Steve Irwin show where he talked about them. Just what the world needs - a spider with an attitude. I think the Black Widow would be our closest match . . . they are bad tempered and their venom is dangerous - but nothing like that critter.

    LOL Me too . . . I was intrigued.

Did anyone notice the irony in this thread, that it is a Sydney Funnel WEB Spider. :-D

Cute, Fred! I think you are thinking of a different web! :-D
I have heard of them, they are a bad one for sure ;)

Many threads in a web also TeeCee. ;)

    Sure enough, Fred ;)

We don't have any poisonous spiders here, but I do marvel at the webs of the ones we do have. I don't know the names of them, but they sure are cool looking in the early morning, when the dew is out. Cool ;)

Hi TEECEE :wave You can get a great picture of a dew soaked spiders web anytime simply by using a mist spray

If I may join the party, here's the other nasty little anachrid ;) we have down here (a little further south). Found the PC in roadside rubbish. Poked around for quite some time inside before discovering our little friend (she was hidden by the power supply). I even removed and replaced the RAM a couple of times.

Hi GCWesq, Nice! I don't mind spiders, as long as they are THERE and not at my FEET! LOL Wild creatures, aren't they? Nice one to stay away from!

@ tonyhale, we are taking one day @ a time, which is all we can do at this point. :( I may go from Nurse Ratchet, to Hurricane Ratchet very soon :mad rolleyes

Dang GCW, I have seen computers with virus and bugs, but that is one nasty 'bug'.

We have a lot of Brown Recluse spiders around here. A doctor was telling me about a person who was bitten on her leg. Apparently, they are using a hyperbaric chamber to help. Worked well, he said she had minimal scaring, and is back at ballet dancing. It really is amazing how much damage just a few ml of venom can do. When you consider how much bigger a person is compared to a spider, you would think all they could do would be cause a bit of pain and irritation...

yeah we have a lot of little nasty bugs here in oz apart from the funnel web there's the trapdoor, redback as shown previously the white tailed spider all of which can be found here locally and some new ones which were only discovered recently.we also have 8 of the ten most venomous snakes in the world, 3 of which i could easily trip over walking out my door.Them being the red belly black, the eastern brown commonly known as the king brown, and the ugliest snake i have ever seen the death adder.
Makes me wunder which is really the safest place to be.

Our Eastern-most state (New Zealand, aka The Shaky Isles) doesn't have any nasties - just the odd earthquake here and there. :-D
