And I thought 56k was bad...

I'm setting up a Debian server, with a 200GB hard drive and.... 16MB of ram.

This is damn painful! It took 5 minutes to fire up a simple TEXT EDITOR! Aggghhh..!

 

Why?

Lol. Wouldn't it be worth the cost timewise to upgrade the ram? I'm sure there is a very good explanation though, I haven't done anything with servers (unless you count crashing the one at work by mistake... )

 

Heh - you should see how long it takes my rig to boot.....

 

There is good reason:

I'm never going to be at the terminal to use it.

All I'm using it for is a big ass network drive, so I just need to set up debian and samba, then leave it forever more. I don't need much ram, 16MB is enough to transfer files over the network without causing a bottleneck.

You should see the rig itself, it is "ghetto". It has a CD drive which is borked and ejects whenever you boot, and none of the drive bay blankers are left. The fan grilles have been cut off to improve airflow. Its got so many holes in it I'm genuinly worried that one of my cats is going to try and go to sleep in it

I would get a little cube case, but the mobo is too big :/ I might be able to get a smaller case, but I dunno. Not really much point in spending money on it, since I'm not going to look at it.

Right now its sitting pride of place next to my web server Quite cool actually, I've got a good mix of manufacturers. Web Server is Microsoft Windows, AMD processor, file server is Debian linux, Intel Celeron processor
