Although I know the official version of Windows 8 won't be out for several months, I've heard it will have a much friendlier interface for use on mobile devices.

I'm eligible for a new phone upgrade with AT&T in a few months and currently have a plain-jane Samsung.

My question: Should I spring for an Android OS smart phone now or hold out and wait to see what the Windows 8 mobile OS looks like? My hope is that Microsoft will get its smart phone act together and - in addition to Android/iPhone type apps - it will be easier to sync data between my phone, PC and MS Skydive.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Hi

Sadly no such beast as a Windows 8 Phone of yet or not one thats been publisised. Windows 8 will be tablet friendly and maybe some like the iPad mobile models will be available and could make voice and video calls and those would be great as Windows 8 on desktop so far has many options to aid the mobile user.

Very possble that a Windows Phone 8 version my co-inside with Windows 8 Desktop but Windows Phone 7 is so good as a mobile OS its hard to re-invent this platform so soon, but I maybe wrong as I'm not in that news area at msft.

The main and really neat option coming to Windows Mobile is Skype HERE the beta app is REEEAALLLLY good!

Skydrive on Windows Mobile and in Windows 8 is awsome..... when they release the upcoming Desktop Skydrive that integrates into Explorer then its going to be OMG soo good, I love having docs and pics on Skydrive that I can access on my phone, desktop via IE and on Windows 8 netbook via the Metro Skydrive, iCloud is similar for Apple users.

I have an iPhone 4, but am really looking forward to having a Windows 8 phone. I did not think they would be out until next year though.

Weirdly Microsoft and I'm fairly close to them has not touted a Windows 8 Phone, maybe a additon to Windows Phone 7 but no major new release is on the cards in the next 6 months.

    Hi Gman863

Android is actually pretty integrated. You obviously have to have a gmail/googlemail account but all your contacts are stored/synced with gmail. So if I add a contact to my phone it appears in second on gmail. Chrome has an offline email pluggin so if you have a laptop you can still get access to your emails when not on the net and I am now using this as my main mail client. I was using Thunderbird with the Zindus plugin to sink contacts with Gmail.

My Photo albums are all managed in Picasa which allows you to publish to the web. You can still keep them private but as soon as you web publish them they appear on your mobile handset in your picture gallery. The big plus is that they arent stored on your phone so dont take up any space. I also have a live desktop app that randomly chooses a photo from Picasa and sets it as my desktop!

Lastly I have also set up an FTP on my NAS storage at home and have an FTP client on my phone which means that I can view all my home documents on my Handset too.

Calendars are also completely syncable too!

Google Docs also syncs between phone and desktop. IMO Android is the most integrated system about. Another nice little perc is that it pulls all my facebook contacts in and if they have a phone number stored on their profile I can call them.

It should be noted that most people using Android havent figured out that your phone has different contact types. Phone Contact, Gmail contact, Facebook contact, linked in contacts. At present Android cant sync between systems as they are fundamentally different databases. Most people copy their contacts from their old phone to sim, put the new sim in their Android handset then copy them to the phone. If you do this you cant sync them as phone contacts and Gmail contacts are separate. Once you have copied them of your sim and onto your phone you have to download them to CSV then import the CSV into your Gmail account. You can then erase all your phone contacts and have them just sitting in Google. If you ever have to change your hanset then you just type in your Google account details and bang, all your contacts and pictures are there!

Incidentally, If you get Ice Cream Sandwich you can install Chrome on your mobile device. Chome stores/syncs all your bookmarks centrally too so I can log onto any internet enabled PC with Chrome install and have full access to all my data!

    Pretty Sweet!

Be careful. The default mode for Google Chrome is to also save passwords. Handy, sure, but a huge risk. Especially if you lose your mobile device.

Not that hard if you had taken the time to do a search.
http://www.pcworld.com/article/243970/nokia_plans_windows_8_tablet_by_june_2012.html As for the Windows mobile OS, it is buggy, and lacking in a lot of features, plus locked down, in that no changes can be mad to the device, unlike Android mobile OS, and the ability to Jailbreak Apple iOS devices. I personally hated the design of the previous Windows mobile OS, and the current one along with 8 are really a turnoff.

I mainly use a IPhone as my main phone and love it over the old Samsung Blackjack that I had, even looked at Windows 7 phones and the iPhone won hands down for everything I wanted. My son has a Android handset and between both types, we both like them for particular features since they both serve their purpose.

I would say for the OP, go with what fits your pocketbook and the best phone that will not only handle what you give it in use, but also will supply all of the features that fit your needs.

I like Android but I think the tablet would be a bigger success with Windows. I would change to windows 8 if they had a really solid build.
I feel that android and iOS both limit the possibilities and windows would help advance the handheld device technology more.

Windows 8 beta version is already released and it is amazing. I hope to get the full version soon. Though I am not a fan of windows phone but think it will be worth to try if theres a windows 8 phone coming anytime soon. :)

It has already been stated by MS that there currently is not a plan to release a Mobile 8 windows version yet into the wild. As for the Desktop/tablet Windows 8, the whole idea of booting everyone into the goofy gui they call Metro is not going to fly in the corporate world. Even with the talk of Windows 9 being tied to the Internet more than 8, means corporate customers are either going to stay with XP a whole lot longer, due to legacy equipment that will not work with 7, or move to 7 if they can get the manufacturers to come up with a fix, or their developers can come up with a fix to get older legacy equipment to run with 7.

No, I see 8 dying very quickly after it is released, due to consumers at the majority will shun it, and as for windows 7 phones vs android v iPhones, the later are just a whole lot easier to use, and not as restricted as Windows mobile OS.

I'm also waiting for WP 8 come out. So many rumors about this WP8 and I'm really interest about it.

As you still have a couple months contract with AT&T, why not wait till the last month and make a decision. WP8 might be out by then.:)

I would disagree as WP7 is more accomodating that the restrictive Apple regime also updates to WP7 work much better than iOS and I base this on my iPhone and that of friends who have had issues with bad or corrupt installs of updates over the years, some friends have moved to WP7 and think its much better in relation to updates, yes there are less apps but majority of apps are crap anyways.

The GUI on WP7 has been in some IT press been heralded as more fluid than that of the opposition. I kinda like how it will integrate with Windows 8 OS, with Email, Contacts, Skydrive, Calendar etc, add an item to one and it replicates to all, kindof iCloud but on steroids.

as for WP8 then that will likely be much later release than that of Windows 8, Windows 8 is being of late ramped up in release terms from my involvement and the PG teams are geared up for a sucessful launch of this OS. I actually think the PG teams have enguaged those members of OEM, EPP and MVP groups a fair bit to nail various areas of W8.

Not heard much on WP8 but I'm not in that product area at msft, but I would imagine 2013 for WP8 as a guesstimate unless they rush it out for a coinciding release as Windows 8 OS.

David, the Windows 7 mobile OS interface is the most confusing interface out there. My mom has a W7os handset, and I hate using it, when trying to show her something. The Android & iOS interfaces are a lot more user friendly, and have friendlier search functions.

Only reason that W7os has been in the news, is because MS has to pay writers to glorify their operating systems. MS is dying, and they are gambling on W8 to save them, which you can see that it will not, because no one likes the metro interface for desktops. Even with this so called talk of a possible mobile interface for smartphone handsets, right now it is a dream, because MS has not released anything in the wild. It is all just on the drawing board and a dream.

Let me brake it down for you all:

    1. iPhone = sucks
    2. Android = great start by google, needs some work, but I enjoy using my Nexus Galaxy.
    3. Windows = MS should try better and faster. It only took them 7 versions of windows to get it right.

I think we are going to have agree to disagree for once here, quite rare for us to disagree, but I think the WM7 interface is much more fluid and easy to use than that of iOS, cannot say I have used Android that much to form an opinion on it, iOS in current form is buggy as hell.

I gave my iPhone to my mum and while she likes it (its a great way into Smartphones) and its easy to do the tasks she needs phonecalls and SMS, the software from last 4 updates has either not installed correctly (one thing I've always hated about iOS and other friends of mine have seen the same corrupt installs) that takes Apple a few updates to the updates to fix.

It also now keeps by itself tuning on wifi, which she does not need and thus draining the battery quickly, both myself and a "Genius" at the Apple store have checked and the settings are off for BT, Wifi etc and it keeps stating wifi is available, software been installed a few times.

WM7s install updates are perfect each time, ZUNE kills iTunes completly IMHO, the menus in WM7 are simple and to the point, the OS is really quick and boot time is at least 3x that of booting an iPhone.

I guess we all like different interfaces and thats good in my book as I think the differing mobile OSes offer different things.

Interesting thoughts, care to elaborate a bit more on those statements as iPhones dont suck at all they are superb peices of kit that are a really easy way into mobile computing. Android cannot comment on and I think you maybe confusing Windows desktop with Windows Mobile.

On Windows desktop, I guess you have not been around Windows OSes from the early days? as DOS3.11, Windows 95, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows 7 (not going into Server varients) are and have been superb Operating Systems.

Yes Windows 7 is a great one but software develops over time and expands with technology, so while Windows 7 is good, it still has its failings and Windows 8 will be very good, although I agree with Browniz that the METRO GUI is not going to enamour corporate users, so likely a kill patch will come out for that. I've seen some really neat bits that have been expanded on in W8 and Task Maanger is one of them, will be superb to help troubleshoot issues.

And just to let you knwo Microsoft work fast and hard but do try as best as possible to get things right, in one project I have been working on for them n the past two weeks has been the first time I have seen them allow outsiders to see and help with certain tasks, I cannot say what it was I did as its under NDA, but it was for me showing that MSFT do take things seriously in getting their software right.

But then no software is always finished as they should always be a beta ;)

Ugliest damn interface I have ever seen. They are losing market share on the current phones with 7.5, will be doing the same when 8 comes out. MS is trying to fight a battle, with a one legged knight with no weapons, on a three legged horse.

By 2014, MS will come out with some other Operating system, or turn around by 3rd quarter 2013, and state that the Surface, 8, and WinOS8 were not as good as they thought, so they are going to go ahead and introduce everything 9, but charge you more for their garbage.

Personally think its better than the BORNING icons of IOS and Android, but thats me, although Android OS on a Samsung Galaxy III has DLNA so really good for connectivity to smart media TVs and Media Players, IOS and WMP do not have this....

  24. brownizs

    brownizs MajorGeek

Actually David, WMP & IOS have DLNA, so want to try again. Icons can be changed, but the WinOS7.x & Win8 interface are the most bassakwards change. This includes the soon to be the worst Office package, Office13.

  25. DavidGP

DavidGP MajorGeeks Forum Administrator - Grand Pooh-Bah Staff Member

WMP7.5 on my HTC HD7 does not have DLNA (I have a Samsung TV with DLNA) so want to enable this for me I would be greatful as would a few frends of mine, step by step to enable will be great.

Office 2013 is for me ok , its no major diffenence to 2010 but the templates areas is good as a plus, but to migrate from 2010 I would not unless you need to as 2013 is not a great move forward for many, it adds Lync, which I find good.

  26. brownizs

There is a huge change in 2013. For one, They are incorporating the fugly metro interface, and making it a social connected waste. As for connecting phones through dlna, only reason is if you are streaming music, which there are apps for that, for both Android & iOS, but Microsoft is known to cripple their phone handsets for various reasons.

Reason I moved away from the Windows platform for phone handset, is 1) it is lacking in features, 2) You have to use a memory card if you want more storage, and 3) the interface is dog slow and fugly.

  27. DavidGP

DavidGP MajorGeeks Forum Administrator - Grand Pooh-Bah Staff Member

Didnt think it was a Metro UI in 2013, more bringing Backstage of 2010 to the fore and pretty much have templates up front and in your face, not that I mind that aspect. The plain-ness of the UI did kinda make me look a few times, and the UI Themes are a waste of space as they are just watermark like UI themes.

Speed of the x64 version is good and I'm using the 2013 Professional version at present as well as installing Visio and Project as I do use them in work at times.

As for WP7 yeah its unlikely I would use the DLNA feature, it was just that week a friend was taking about it and she has a Noika Lumia and it too did not connect via DLNA, DLNA is a feature of a few of my devices I dont think I have used as yet, I'm LAN'd up with TV and Media devices already.

I'm in limbo at present on which mobile device to go for next its likely not to be another iOS based as been there and while it has its place for opening up users to "smartphones" I dont think its the best for me, maybe WP8 or a Galaxy SIII are in the running so far.

Android Phones are really good, and I personally think better than iOS but then they do suffer from lax apps that may cause malware on your phone, iOS and WP don't have this as far as I'm aware, unless in iOS you jailbreak it.

I'm likely to get a WP8 and either Nokia 920 or HTC 8X in the next few weeks, as I just like the integration with Office and now Windows 8, suits my criteria perfectly. It may not others but its your choice.

  32. Adrynalyne

    ...yet.

Apple is keeping malware out because they have an approval process. Does Micrsooft do the same? There is nothing inherently more secure about either platform.

  33. Adrynalyne

Nothing can be customized to your liking as much as an Android phone. The app ecosystem is miles ahead of WP.

Those two reasons are reason enough.

Microsoft and its apps store does regulate apps unlike Android but more like iOS, not perfect but the apps are as far as I know safe and checked.

I can actually pose this question as I will be chatting to the Windows Team next month, but I know its likely to be the answer that WP8 is like iOS in app security/malware.

  35. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

Yeah, Android provides a lot of freedom, and with that comes the risks attached to it.

  36. DavidGP

DavidGP MajorGeeks Forum Administrator - Grand Pooh-Bah Staff Member

Yes risks and do they in the end have better apps for this as more freedom for devs is apparent, so they may well develop for this platform over having to jump through hoops, I dunno as I don't off hand know any iOS, Android or WP devs, I may meet a few next month at a MSFT meeting I'm off too, so I will be better informed.

I personally don't mind all three platforms (not used Blackberry though) as they have a place in the market for various users, for me Windows Phone offers the best performance and apps I need, although the app store is not a big as the others, it depends on what you want quality over quantity. WP for me is Skydrive and Office as well as Exchange, but that's me for someone else it maybe iOS apps and that's fine.

I have done the Apple thing and have an iPhone still but I prefer Win Phones and more so the Win8 Phones as it will tie in with my Windows 8 desktop installs more.
