Well, I guess I get what I pay for. I'm referring to AntiVir. This program was touted by this web site and it's authors as a good free anti-virus program, and it seem that way from the start. But for the last few weeks this program has become a major hassle to update via the internet updater. It's not worth it. I might as well go to a program like F-Prot or something else even though I will have pay for it. At least I should be able to update one of those programs whenever I want without having to put up with the stress and aggravation that comes from trying to update AntiVir because someone is having server issues that has lasted for almost a month now with no signs of it getting better anytime soon. I sat here for 2 solid hours trying to connect to the AntiVir servers, and it will not do anything but say it's trying to open a file and then just sit there, or it will show me what updates are out there, and then try to download them, but then crap out. I've seen other posts from other people regarding this issue so I'm not alone, but the author of this program doesn't seem to care about his customers, and/or is unwilling to try to solve this problem. Either way, I'm fed up and it's time for me to move on. Good luck to anyone who wishes to use AntiVir at least when it comes to keeping it updated. You're gonna need it.

I find it interesting that you are complaining about a free application.
Ever try to download the updates manually and install them? it's relatively easy

    http://www.free-av.com/vdfdown.htm

    Scroll all the way down.

Download the vdf file.. disable your AV and paste the vdf file into the root of the AVPERSONAL directory.

    problem solved.

First of all I should not have to manually update it. That's the whole point of the internet updater. If I have to do that, then you might as well get rid of the built in updater. Secondly, if the servers are down, then how are you gonna get the updates manually? This is a server problem that needs to be addressed. If I have to start manually updating this program when there are many other anti-virus apps out there that do all of this automatically, then I'm wasting my time with this program. Plain and simple.

It's a free program so you have no reason to complain. If you were paying for it, then I would agree with you. Regardless, Antivir Personal Edition IS a good program. If you're having issues with it then try AVG (also free); because honestly, complaining about a free program is rediculous.

I was able to download the file just a few minutes ago.

There is a (free) support forum on Anti-Vir site so if there are any known problems you can get info there.

Before you go buy check out Avast AV. Definitely the most feature-rich freeware, almost feels like payware. Used to be a major buggy resource-hungry beast but Ive tried latest on faster computer and most importantly XP not Win9X. Smooth as AVG - and Anti-Vir :) Also have support forum, you can even get numbers for how much it has improved. More hungry than AVG etc. for sure but also does much more. On win9x it might feel like a Norton install dont know.

btw, you can find same type of complaints on Anti-Vir forum, like lack of support and no "user care" or what you will call it. They dont have to care about you and may be they dont, heh.

    after reading your post tslocum
theres not really a lot to say you want a free program, yet you want the kind of support you get for a paid one

some people really need to get real!!

    OH well

Well, thanks for nothing to all of you all who could not provide any decent help. I've wasted my time even bothering to ask for help. I can see I've wasted my time with this program. I'm not the one having the problems with this program. This is a server issue plain and simple. I do agree with you all on one thing, this is a free program, and you pay for what you get. In this case, lousy service. So in that respect, you are all right. I got what I paid for. Time to give another anti-virus program a try. Good ridance to AntiVir.
