Hello, when i try to do a clean install of windows xp on my machine when it gets to "copying files to the installation folder" after the format of the hard drive i get this Blue Screen of Death:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

The problem seems to be caused by the following file: ntfs.sys

    PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed.
If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any Windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing.
If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

    Technical information:

    *** STOP: 0x00000050 (0xF000ED8E, 0x00000001, 0xF7D0E666, 0x00000000)

    *** ntfs.sys - Address F7D0E666 base at F7CEE000, DateStamp 42797de8

I keep getting this blue screen during windows xp setup and i've tested my RAM with memtest86 which gave 0 errors! What else could be wrong to cause this? How do i fix it? How do i disable caching or shadowing? I've tried looking in the BIOS settings but can't seem to find it anywhere! I've also updated the BIOS but it doesn't help.

Do you have virus protection set on the MBR in the bios? ...that will stop a setup of xp.

This blue screen is commly caused by Damaged RAM, corrupt drivers.

    Follow the steps below:
In ur BIOS set CD-ROM has 1st Boot Device.
Insert XP Setup CD, to boot from CD.
After the intial loading of drivers is over, on the Welcome to Setup Screen with 3 options; Press R key, to "Repair XP installtion using Recovery Console".
U will be prompted for Adminstrator account's password. Press Enter if the password was blank.
Now u should be on the Recovery Console command prompt, type the following command:
    chkdsk x: /r /f
(Replace x: with all ur drive letters one-by-one to run chkdsk on them seprately).
If any errors are fixed, reboot and try to start PC normally; otherwise continue to next step.
Below are two ways to replace the corrupt NTFS driver:
Use Method1 only if u downloaded SP2 and installed it.
Use Method2 if u have installed SP2 from CD and u have the CD; or if u have'nt installed SP2 at all.
    Method1:
    Type the following comamds:
    cd\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386
    copy ntfs.sys c:\Windows\System32.
    Method2:
    Type the following comamd:
    copy x:\i386\ntfs.sys c:\windows\system32\ntfs.sys.
(where x: the drive-letter of ur CD-ROM drive and c: is the partition where XP was installed)

We will also need to check for Damaged RAM.

ye i looked at this..can the ram still be faulty if its passed several memory testing programs in 2 pc's? i cnt disable the L2 cache on this motherboard theres no option in bios! i've tried changing video adapters, i used a AGP graphics card instead of the onboard one and it didnt help, apart from that theres only 1 ram chip in the pc..what else can i do?

  20. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

Did you try a different ram stick from a known good system? That is compatable, of course.

  21. zaid786

    zaid786 Private E-2

wish i had a DDR333 ram stick spare..lol my pc has DDR400, my sis's pc has SDRAM, everyone i know has DDR400 which i cant use because DDR333 is the maximum on this mobo lol, should i buy a new 1? this one isnt giving any errors!

  22. zaid786

    zaid786 Private E-2

if i put DDR400 ram stick in a DDR333 max mobo will it still work but turn it down? or will the mobo blow?

Memory: 2 DDR DIMM slots: DDR1 and DDR2
    PC2700 (DDR333) / PC2100 (DDR266) / PC1600 (DDR200),
    Max. 2GB (see CAUTION 1)

What does the Caution 1 refer to?
Hate to have you spend when we are still not certain its the problem ...though I can't figure out what else it could be.

  24. zaid786

    zaid786 Private E-2

Caution 1: PC1600 (DDR200) is supported ONLY when using FSB200 (Duron) processor.

I've spent money on this pc already be replacing a few things i hate to spend more :(

I believe it will just slow the ram down to 333...

fsb speed should dictate the speed ...

what would it hurt to try?

  27. zaid786

    zaid786 Private E-2

so should i try a ddr400 then? i've got 2 in my pc..i could use one of them..
