Annoying XP standby problem

After cleaning out some old programs using "Add/Remove Programs" I've discovered that the computer no longer returns from "StandBy" properly!

When I move the mouse or hit a key the computer's power light comes on and the fan turns on but nothing else happens. The system won't respond at all to any key sequence - even the Alt-Esc,U,U sequence recommended by Microsoft.

I have checked that there is no hardware fault by using the FreeDOS ACPI routines: they all work perfectly. (By the way, these FreeDOS routines are a great way of checking this sort of possible hardware fault).

So there must be some sort of software problem within XP. I've tried running MSCONFIG in diagnostic mode with basic drivers only and the problem is still there.

Any one have a clue as to what might be the cause? Or does any one know how to re-install just that bit of XP?

    It's driving me nuts! :cry

Yea, I've tried all that once - but tried it again after your post.

Trying all of the suggestions on that link tells me there's nothing wrong with my computer! But there is ...:cry

    Thanks anyway.

    Anyone else got any ideas?

I've always used the power button to resume from standby, I no longer use hibernation. Check Control Panel/Power Options.

Doesn't make any difference whether I try to resume by pressing the power button or anything else: the discs start and the LED turns on, but nothing else!

The Control Panel/Power Options only seems to let you choose what happens when you press the power button - not which method of resuming you prefer. Or am I missing something?

I'm beginning to wonder whether reinstalling XP completely might be the only way out of this. But the idea fills me with horror! Has anyone any experience of reinstalling XP? Is there a pain free way of doing it? :confused
