I don't claim to be an expert by any means but I've helped 3 people now get rid of Antivirus XP (among other stuff) using your Read & Run First guide. It's very helpful and I'm very thankful. I wonder though if the enemy isn't reading it also. It first took me 15 min then 1 1/2 hour and then many hours to clean there computers. So now like a dummy it's on mine. I started following your guide (admitedly I didn't do the Control Panel-Add/Remove Programs step). Right off the bat with SuperAntiSpyware I had a similar result as another post. It didn't ask about Quarintine and Removal just reboot. On the reboot my desktop was gone. I've tried following your guide for msconfig and system restore to no avail. It never makes it anywhere. I tried to start back at the beginning but don't know how to get into Add/Remove Programs from Task Manager. I've tried starting SuperAntiSpyware from Task Manager and nothing seems to happen. Add to all this that my computer keeps turning itself off and restarting, most of the time before I'm able to do anything. I'm a pretty layed back guy but I'm getting very frustrated. Where do I start? I'll do anything you ask!

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Yes they do read how malware removal forums are removing their malware and they keep changing it to make it more and more difficult. This is nothing new. It has always been this way. What is new is the complexity level that malware has risen to. They often hook themselves into the operating systems in ways that can now cause problems like you are seeing or can even make a PC unbootable when the malware is removed. Such is the state of malware and this is why it is so important for PCs to be properly updated and have proper protection. It will lower the possibility of picking up such nasty infections and could also decrease the severity of the infection if it still gets in.

You can just run appwiz.cpl from the Run box but this is not going to help you now.

Try running SUPERAntiSpyware a second time after it you run it the first time and nothing appears to happen. You may find that it now appears.

Also you could try renaming the SUPERAntiSpyware.exe file to SAS.EXE to see if it will run. This sometimes works. It it does, see if you can look at what it removed (if anything) and restore it from backups. It may not have ever gotten to the point of removal. The malware you had may have crashed your PC before SAS could remove it and crashing while all this is running with files open ....etc is what cause the issues you are having now. Do you see the C:\Windows\explorer.exe file if you browse from Task Manager. Try double clicking it. This is Windows Explorer and if it runs, your Desktop would appear.

Do you have the other tools on your PC? Can you run Malwarebytes and MGtools and get us the logs?

    Thanks chaslang,

I was able to get it all clean last night. I was able to get SuperAntiSpyware to run and finish the process on Readn & Run First. What actually helped was a system restore I had tried earlier finally finished. I didn't even know it was still trying amidst the shutdowns. From there I was able to run everything. You guys are awesome!
