ok, so i couldnt find any other way to hook up my computer to my surround sound other than this.

i bought 2 splitters from radio shack, they have 2 female ends and one male.
my surrround sound has one input area, so i put one splitter into each. (edit: its an rca input)
into the splitter in the left audio slot i pluggged in my left audio cords from my computer and my directv box. and the same with the one plugged into the right.

my problem: the directv sound is extremely drowned out, even when there is no sound being sent from my computer.
if i unplug the cable from my computer, nothing changes, but if i unplug the cords on the other end from the splitters, the volume immediately jumps for the directv box.

what i think is going on: there must be a signal constantly coming from the cord i have going from my computer to the splitters, when i unplug it from my cmputer but leave it in on the splitters i sometimes get a faint radio station. this cord is a headphone to rca attachment.

does anyone have an idea of what to do? something i could buy to fix this, or perhaps a program i could get that would not send any sort of signal out when there isnt one to send? any help would be appreciated, thank you.http://i39.tinypic.com/2u4k5ug.jpg

you can fix it by installing the highly awesome dixie cup speakers.
you simply buy a few dixie cups (or use the mcdonalds cup you have in adundance collection dust in your nanny's closet).
poke a hole on the bottom as a many of the cups as you'd like
(number of cups will change depending on your preferences)
and simply take a piece of string and slide it through each one of the holes in the cup. (make sure to make the string extra long so you can spread out speakers)
then simply duct tape your cups to your desired destination (and make sure to tape one to the speaker on your tv)
    and voila.
you will have the greatest surround sound ever invented by man.

    you can thank me later
    i love you :-D

my friend thought that the cord to the computer could be the problem and gave me some ones to replace it. it now has a male to male headphone cord going from the computer to a female to female headphone to rca cord, which then goes into a male to male rca cord that plugs into the splitters

when unplugged from my computer, or from any of the smaller pieces of the cord, the directv sound works just fine, and when its in my computer and the computer is off, it works fine, but when plugged into my computer, the same problem. im certain theres just a blank signal being sent out, even if i mute it i get this problem. there must be a program i can get?

disabling my sound card doesnt work either. under the device manager>sound, video, and game controllers i disabled the only only listen option capable of being disabled. the others are codecs and drivers im pretty sure.
the disabled option is named "soundMAX integrated digital audio"

my card has 3 ports in the back, as im pretty sure most of them do, one for regular speakers, one for a microphone, and im not sure what the third is for but i dont feel like looking.
if i plug it into the other non-microphone port there is no reduction in sound for the directv box. i dont know why this happens, but my only problem now is that my card/the software that came with it will only allow me to put rear speakers into that port, so all the sound that should come out of the front, comes out of the back. theres nothing to simply switch the rear and front speakers in any of the options, trust me, ive looked. does anyone know of something i can download that would let me do this? please someone help me.
