Ok this one is for my dad. he has his own business and wants a fast reliable (low cost if possible) and good computer for doing things like quickbooks, photo managing, managing files and just the basic business stuff. Also would like it so it stays fast running in the future if there are future programs that may slow it down. So I'd say the main focus is the processor and ram. The GPU doesn't have to be anything special because it's not for gaming or video editing. I think he is going to want an HDMI or VGA port though. The tower can be plane along with the PSU which probably doesn't have to be too big. If you can start putting things together and let me know I'd appreciate it. Also if you want just let me know of a good MOBO to use for this PC and I could go from there and later ask if what I put together is good. Thanks!

With Windows 7, you probably don't want onboard video; there are several low-cost passive cooling (no noisy fan) video cards available from Newegg (a VERY reputable computer parts website).

I'm AMD biased, and ASUS makes pretty solid motherboards, so take look at this and see if you can build an appropriately priced computer around it.

Also, just as a tip for Newegg (if you have never shopped there before), I would personally avoid buying anything with less than a 4 "egg" rating.

One of the biggest questions on "future programs" is if you think your dad will ever use it to edit HD video. Although HD camcorders are now dirt cheap, the processing power required to edit HD is massive.

If the answer is a "maybe" or higher, I'd err on the side of caution and go with a build similar to this:

    * AMD Quad Core CPU (about $100-$120).
    * Gigabyte or ASUS ATX (full size) board with FOUR DDR3 memory slots.
    * Minimum 500-watt quality brand power supply (Corsair or any other rated 5 eggs/stars).
    * 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 (with two open slots in case you ever need to add more).
    * It's OK to start with decent on-board video - many better boards have HDMI built-in. You can always add an upgrade video card later on.
    * Hard Drive with at least 32MB Cache (preferably 64MB - WD Caviar Blacks are fast and affordable).

Like Speculant said, read the reviews carefully and buy items rating at least a 4 out of 5.

    Hope this helps. :)

sorry I haven't been on in a while. my dad said he wants something fast =/....he is technologically illiterate and can't speak for himself when it comes to cost vs. performance. I like AMD also and I have begun a build. I highly doubt he would ever edit cideo because he's not big on technology and has no camcorder. also he would probably tell me to do it and I built a strong pc that can handle that. he will use it for buisness so he wants something that won't lag online and can handle things like quickbooks(I'm not familiar with it and don't no if it's a program like word or like norton when it somes to cpu usage ect.) and other buisness things that might come in the future(...=/...) I think I will buy 2 things tonight because they are on sale and not a bad deal. If I end up not wanting them newegg said I can return it if i don't open it. so here's what I got.

He wants a mid tower so this Cooler Master is on sale tonight.
He wants a lot of RAM and I was going to buy this G skill 8gb tonight.(more then enough for him and for a while in the future I would say)

If you can, build around those things. I will post a list of what I got, let me know if something is better than what I have whether it be that its a lot cheaper with not much performance difference or the other way around.(especially the GPU haha)

    Gigabyte GPU

    Phenom 11 1090T
2 Seagate HDD one for backup
    LiteON or ASUS dvd Burner
RaidMax PSU or Corsair kind of difference price but I don't know how well raid max is or if there is a better one out there.
Like I said I don't know whether to go with the micro atx with onboard video(cheaper and don't HAVE to buy a GPU but might want to) or the ATX without graphics and throw this Gigabyte GPU on it. I am leaning towards the micro because it has onboard video and HDMI but the graphics card in the ATX might be better?($60 dollar difference worth it?) also the full ATX has 8 reviews that aren't the greatest. Basically I am lost on the MOBO and GPU. Maybe you can browse around and find me a good MOBO or MOBO and GPU set up? Also I don't think the micro has SATA inputs?

Wow, that's a pretty high end machine for just business, I was thinking at most a quad core IMO. Anyways, I'd go for full ATX just for expandibilty. 8GB RAM is overkill ATM. I'd rather get the Corsair 650 again for stability and expandability. Oh, I've got the same case and he doesn't need it as it makes noise, still a good case. If you get the hexacore and a high end graphics card then that case will keep things cool.

BTW, why did you spec in a half height video card as the case has plenty of room?

yeah he said he wants what i got so im trying to make a toned down version of mine. the 8gb ram is overkill i agree but nice to have for the future and it seems when you look around you might *** well spend a little extra for a lot more? and he wants a cool looking case >.> so i thought the reviews were good, looked good, mid tower, and on sale was perfect. I'll update the psu to your suggested one(same price after shipping). Thanks. Also the 6 core is decently priced for a while with the promo and when you compare it to the quads it's pretty close. that leaves a few more questions in the post below. Thanks so far!

Fair enough and dad can expense the purchase too.;) As for the case, it is cool looking eh? :) Go for it then but take a rethink on that video card first. No point to it IMHO.

Those onboard graphics appear to be sufficient for what the computer is going to be used for, so go with the M4A78LT-M. When you get it built, set the BIOS to use the maximum amount of RAM possible for video memory.
