I just got this infection the other day on another computer and before I could fully fix it I got it on second PC today (other thread: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=270722)

For this one I don't have access to the Admin account so I had to get into Safe Mode. Networking wouldn't work so I couldn't download the latest Malwarebytes definitions, so I applied the registry fix from Step 2 here:malwaretips.com That allowed me to execute programs again, which were all being blocked by the malware. I hope that fix doesn't mess anything up.

Then I ran the cleaning procedure. After MGtools, I ran RKill from Step 3 on the site above and it found nothing.

Before we continue I would like for you to use MSConfig to put this machine back into normal start up mode

If you do not use Windows Messenger Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Delete this file if it shows:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Ana Carandang\Local Settings\Application Data\1§¯¬«_¨AAAAŽ’€EEEIIIID¥OOOO™xOUUUšY_á…*ƒa„†‘‡Š‚ˆ‰¡Œ‹d¤•¢“o”öo—£–y_˜

Now go to this MGTools and download the new version of MGtools.exe. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run the new C:\MGTools.exe and attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip

    Tell me what issues remain.

Chaslang had me run JRT.exe for the same problem on another PC. Should I run that for this one too?

There are no remaining issues I can see. Could you tell me how the infection was able to pass through MSE? Is it because I don't have a dedicated firewall besides Microsoft's? Do I need Malwarebytes Pro for real time scanning? I upgraded to that but it duplicates the functions of MSE.

I see no reason why not to :)

http://imageshack.us/a/img841/7292/thisisujrt.gif Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
    • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
    • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
    • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    • Attach JRT.txt to your next message.

No idea how it got through. Antivirus is not perfect.

I would not say you "need" it, choice is yours though! :)

Since my last post, Windows Security Center has been listing Virus Protection as 'off' and I get a red shield in the tray, but actually MSE is on, up to date, and its tray icon is green. So what's going on there?

What I did was manually make it update the definitions and that took care of it. It hasn't shown a red shield for the last 24 hours. If it does it again, I'll try a reinstall.

I think that takes care of everything, so thanks.

    Most welcome. :) Safe surfing.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 4 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
