Trying to fix my brother-in-law's computer remotely to no avail. He has the famous clicksearchclick problem, which seems to render certain keywords as links, even outside of the browser. This is probably not the only problem--there are several suspicious things happening.

Problem is: I cannot install any antispyware or run any antivirus programs. Not a good situation.

Here's the hijackthis log. Any and all help appreciated!

Please read the announcement and sticky threads. HJT logs should only be posted when requested and then they must be attachments to your message.

    Please follow the steps below:

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
Also to get you started and to reduce the size of your HJT log. Do the following:

Kill each of the below processes if running and then fix all lines in your HJT log that refer to them.
    C:\WINDOWS\sys242.exe
    c:\windows\cpvxxie.exe
    c:\windows\ositjxn.exe
    c:\windows\ygksdoi.exe
    c:\windows\cbsrxvb.exe
    c:\windows\bwfffmg.exe

After fixing the HJT lines, boot into safe mode and delete the above files.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem:

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

    Hi,

Thanks for the reply, and sorry about the in-line hijackthis log.

It has taken me a bit of time to get through all of the steps, and to be honest, a bunch of things did not work. It seems that things are better, but the clicksearchclick problem remains. Here's what I did, and what worked and didn't.

Re the post DO NOT POST UNTIL YOU HAVE READ THIS: How to: Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal:
    1. all Getting Prepared steps done
    2. Scanning & Cleaning steps
    - tried to run online virus scans in safe mode -- unable to connect to internet
    - tried to run online virus scans in normal mode -- do not function
    - ran Avert Stinger -- 11 trojans identified
    - ran CCleaner
    - UNABLE TO INSTALL or run any anti-spyware programs

    Re your response here:
    1. killed all running files
    2. fixed w/hijack this
    3. removed files in safe mode

    My situation is currently:
    - Much better. Lots of bad things seem to be gone.
    - Clicksearchclick still controls IE homepage, causes intermittent pop-ups, and changes a whole bunch of keywords in any browser (IE or firefox tried) into links to clicksearchclick.com. Also unable to click on several links as they go to clicksearchclick.com
    - Unable to run or install any anti-spyware software

I have attached a new hijackthis log.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Marc

Since Chaslang is very busy at the moment I will keep you moving along. Since you cant complete the online scans, procede with the following steps.

Download the following two files, create a folder on your desktop, call it TSC. Save these 2 files there!

    Sysclean Package

    Pattern.zip

Once you have these downloaded into the folder you just created, double click the file sysclean.com

When the system cleaner loads, click SCAN to start the scanner.

After the scan completes reboot and post a fresh HJT log along with the log from the scan.

After completing what BJ suggested follow the steps below, but please note that ALL browsers ( C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe ) must be closed before running HijackThis.

If you are using WinXP or WinMe, make sure you have system restore disabled (per the tutorial).
For all OS types, make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Please run HijackThis and click on the "Open the Misc Tools Section" button on the open page. Then select "Open process manager" on the left-hand side. Look for the following process (or processes) and one at a time kill them by selecting it and then click "Kill process". Then click yes.
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\Services\{27AE3F75-08C7-4846-9A80-3A1E150F731D}\SVCHOST.EXE

After killing all the above processes, click "Back".
Then please click "Scan" and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.clicksearchclick.com/index.php?aff=9
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = localhost
    F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=explorer.exe winlogin.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [Srv32 spool service] C:\WINDOWS\System32\spoolsrv32.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ssgrate.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\winsystems.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [Srv32 spool service] C:\WINDOWS\System32\spoolsrv32.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [winlogon] winlogin.exe
O9 - Extra button: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper - {FD41EB56-DF00-4ED1-9E4F-7005E9F636F8} - (no file) (HKCU)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper - {FD41EB56-DF00-4ED1-9E4F-7005E9F636F8} - (no file) (HKCU)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete:
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\spoolsrv32.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\winsystems.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\winlogin.exe <--- be careful!!!! This is not the same as winlogon.exe which is valid.
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\Services\{27AE3F75-08C7-4846-9A80-3A1E150F731D}\SVCHOST.EXE

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is, uncheck it and try again. Other wise open Task Manager and kill the process if running then delete the file.

Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST). Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1) If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2) Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3) If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.

Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log. And tell us how things are working.

    Hi,

I have done pretty much everything you suggested, and things are almost back to normal. Thank you very much.

I still have one or not so small problems, namely that:

    1. I cannot run online virus scanners. None, as far as I can tell. My IE settings have been reset to default. I get the Active X prompt; from there, I get an error in the webpage telling me it failed. These are the ones I have tried:
    http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

    http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/default.asp?productid=symhome&langid=ie&venid=sym

    http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

Also the Microsoft Malware one, but that one I was able to download and run.

    2. I cannot install certain key anti-spyware programs. They download, but when I click to install them, nothing happens. I am able to install other software, and was able to install SpywareBlaster.

    Cannot install:
    - ad-aware
    - spybot
    - ms antispyware beta

    Any help would be appreciated.

Per prior requests, I've attached the latest HijackThis log (from today), and a SysClean log although it's a couple days old already.

    Thanks!

    Marc

Try booting into safe mode an installing one application. Start with MS Antispyware. If you get any error messages, make sure you indicate the exact message you get.

I do not like the looks of the below process line:

    \?\C:\WINDOWS\system32\WBEM\WMIADAP.EXE

This is a valid application but it should not appear like this. It should just say

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\WBEM\WMIADAP.EXE

I'm not sure what is causing this but it could be a problem.
