I have two slots in total on the pc I'm working on.

Now currently, the one slot has 256mbs in it. Is it possible for me to put a 512mbs of ram in the second slot, or does it have to be another ram stick of 256?

If your computer can run on just one 256Mb, then you shouldn't need to match it in size. Knowing a bit more about your computer would help us verify that though.

So how do I know what speed the ram is?
All I know is that the current ram is 256
So does that mean I can add a 512 and leave the 256 in? And if yes, how do i know what speed?

And yes, but the one that is faster will slow down to the lower speed.

Well Everest shows under the SPD Memory Modules:

    DIMM1 : Smart Modular 256 MB PC2100 SDRAM

so does that mean that the speed is pc2100?

Yes, but can also use PC1600 if that is what you have.

Note that installing a PC1600 memory stick will slow down the memory speed overall. :)
