Another Search 4.0 isssue

A while back, our less than stellar IT people made some changes to the server. As a result, the Search Companion quit working.
Their explanation is that they changed from NT to Server 2003, and that the new software isn't compatitable with the search companion.
Their (supposed) fix was to install Search 4.0, which is almost worthless.
I work as an engineer, and HAVE to search the servers for different models and drawings that have been previously created.
Are the IT people being honest with me about the search not being compatitable, and is there any type of search that actually does work correctly?

From what I read Search Companion should work fine with Windows Server 2003
