another XP and black screen issue

Hello.

I have an older PC running Windows XP with the most current updates. After a couple of days away on vacation, I turned the computer on today to find that it boots up and immediately moves on to a black screen. Using my laptop, I searched Major Geeks' for postings on this problem. I found useful replies, but they all seem to involve starting in safe mode. I have succeeded in starting in safe mode, but when I get to the "select the operating system to start" window, XP is selected already but the enter command won't work. So I can't move beyond this screen to try some of the suggestions given to previous posters.

I'd appreciate any help you can provide.
