The computers (Dell Optiplex GX270) I am forced to use have been set up to delete user files after the computer is left idle for 30 minutes. I do not have full admin access so there are plenty of things I can not change. Leaving a program open or something downloading does not stop it.

I have tried opening word or notepad and leaving a key pressed so it types endlessly but after a while the keyboard turns off and is not functional until a restart. My only thought in that department is to finds a ps/2 to usb adapter and see if plugging the keyboard into a usb port keeps it from turning off. That is if an adapter like that exists.

I am fairly desperate so any sort of help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Don't fully understand the situation .... but sounds like you're are being forced to save your files to disk if you need to leave the 'puter for any length of time.

Sorry if I was too vague. There is two things that I have been trying to do on the computer. First is downloading various large files. Second is compile animation that is an extremely slow process. With limited time I can sit at the computer I have been wanting to simply let it go and come back in the morning. So because it deletes everything I have not been able to do so.

Only way around this that I can think of is to talk to whoever is the admin on the computer ....

I know this thread is years old, but it just turned up in a search I was doing, so I'm going to post the answer, in case anyone else is searching for it:

There are tiny, simple USB devices like Mouse Jiggler that you can plug in, that emulate a mouse or keyboard (which you can do even without admin access), that will periodically pretend to wiggle the mouse, or tap the capslock twice, to keep the machine from going idle.

Nazi admins, who don't understand that security must be balanced with productivity, not given complete priority, make such devices necessary.
