I've got this particular question in the end of my thread i've had going in the malware forum also, but...Not only are they extremely busy, but it appears as though Shadow is the only hanging around so far this morning, and I was hoping to get a pointer relatively quick, and those guys over there have other people to worry about, that need more help than me!!!!

So anyway...I figured I would post the question here too, and see if it catches anybody's attention!?!?!

Thanks to the thread i've had going in the malware forum...my scanners, logs, etc., etc., are all showing that I am now squeaky clean, and I can now access the desktop settings...however...None of the programs (AVG, Adaware, Spybot, Microsoft Spy, etc.) cannot make the outgoing connections necessary to update. I have checked and rechecked all firewall settings (windows firewall) and even turned off the firewall, and i've checked and reset the security settings, etc. in the "Internet Options" and still no success. So then I tried un-installing AVG and Adaware and re-installing, just as a test, and still no good, even with the firewall off...even though I would think that it shouldn't matter since windows firewall is only an incoming firewall...correct!?!?!? SO I'm wondering if there is another setting in there that all of that junk might have screwed up, and I'm just looking over it, or is there something lurking behind the scenes, that no-one can see!?!?

    Any thoughts??

I hate to give advice on Malware Removal, but as you said that you showed up clean, then it should be ok. Check your hosts file, as some Malware will modify this to prevent antivirus and spyware udating. Hope this helps!:)

as well as checking the hosts file as Novice said can stop some apps from connecting, its also worth while as malware was evident to run the winsock fix http://www.majorgeeks.com/WinSock_XP_Fix_d4372.html

plus I would also in case their are some bad entries in your DNS cache flush it.... but opening the Command Prompt window and typing ipconfig /flushdns

Ok...sooooooo...I haven't had the opportunity to learn too much about the Hosts file and how to use it (this is the first time i've ever had the need to even look at it), so if it looks like this below...

    127.0.0.1 localhost

    127.0.0.1 localhost

So isn't that the way a barebones generic hosts file should look like??

Like I said...I haven't ever done anything with this before, so I know nothing...but hopefully I will learn now!!!!:)

So being that mine is just those two lines...should I copy and paste your example and save it as a new hosts file...or just leave it alone??

Sorry I'm still slightly confused as to your guy's answers!!

I got it...forgot about the Sygate firewall!! All the crap that was on here, I guess screwed it all up, so I just un-installed and re-installed, and now it's just peachy!!!
