I need to get a new antivirus program, so in your opinion, what is the best free anti-virus software available?

I've got alot of people recommending that I give AVG a try, but does it find+remove trojans/spyware [etc] or just viruses?

None find or remove everything ....read some of the threads in the malware section and you will see alot of posters with Norton or Mcafee that have problems (and not with just malware) ....so many here would recommend AVG and a quick read of the How to stay malware free thread in the malware section ...in fact, read many of the stickeys in that section.:) :)

I have no problems [anymore] with viruses or spyware, I just want some suggestions/feedback about some free AV software so I can keep it that way.

I didn't mean that I want one that removes everything, just a program that attempts to find and remove all forms of malware instead of one type specifically.

Well theres Security Suites that come with antispyware/antivirus/firewall all in one but you usually have to pay alot for those and they can slow down your pc drastically. As for free protection like you want, I doubt its available.
I use NOD32, one of the best antiviruses out there, but its not free.

Some good alternatives are Avast and AVG, both work like a charm.

If you are willing to pay for an AV, then I would say NOD32 is the best bet. For free versions, either Avast! or AntiVir, sorry and I don't mean to knock anyone but AVG is horrible, just horrible, it's been at the bottom of AV-Comparatives list for a while now and I used it sometime back and I was overun with infection.

I would take TimW's advice netsurfer....prevention and education is the best cure!
I see too many people these days who think that because they have the greatest antivirus going(paid or free), that they think they are immune, and that no amount of surfing, clicking, downloading or whatever, will infect them.... think again!

All the available programs on MG have been both tried and tested.
All come with our recommendations and provide excellent protection, however none of them are foolproof in the wrong hands!

Ok..I paid $$$ for my Avast Pro, but i also spent many hours researching the malware threads and other sites, educating myself on the low downs of Malware and i believe it has paid of for me.
So far, i have not had to bother the Malware gods and hope that i never will!!

    Just my 2 cents worth!

    Regards....
