Hey all... I'm looking for recommendations for a good antispyware app for Vista. Actually, I'm looking for two: one that provides active real-time protection with scanning and removal features; and one that just scans for and removes what it finds. Freeware is key here. Full featured freeware, no trials, no limits. For scanning I've been using AdAware and SUPER Antispyware, but haven't really found anything for active protection... all suggestions are appreciated!
    Thanks.

You mean you disabled the marvellous 'Defender' ? Did you give it a fair trial? It offers both resident and scan options - and it's built into Vista.

The best protection is common sense IMO, don't mess with fire and you won't get burnt. I can't even remember the last virus/malware/trojan I caught. Tell a lie, I can remember, it was the blaster worm, which was what, 3, 4 or more years ago?

Mind you I do use the ultimate anti everything software a lot of the time - it's called Linux

Yes as the above have commented on, the Vista version of Defender is far superiour to that which was released for XP, well worth keeping and adding a manual on demand antispyware scanner such as BoClean or A-Aquared, do stear clear of Ad-Aware which I cannot recomend at this time as its too reliant on picking up harmless cookies to inflate its scanning ability.

    A-Squared

BUT for active protection, do leave Defender as its ok.

Hello all Im new at this but I can say that I had no luck with the A Squared program I found Virus with antivir and the same computer had A Suqared at the same time it did not find it and they both were up to date. Maybe I was a one in a million but not sold on A Squared now so ........... Just a thought..

    Hi

Its swings and roundabouts as your Antivir application will miss many malwares that A-Squared will find ( A-Squared is a complementry scanner to assist your main AV ) , every application in security will find different things, none will find all!

Never rely on being 100% safe with any Antivirus, they will only protect you to a point, best antivirus is the user as in you and being careful in where you surf and what you download and install.

I still have Defender enabled and installed, I was just kind of looking for a 2nd line of defense.... I didn't even think of BOClean even though I run it on my home PC. Maybe I didn't think it was Vista compatible. Interesting comments about AdAware and it's "inflated" scanning results.... I thought that maybe I hadn't set a filter correctly or something. AdAware does seem to get lots of false positives, and seems to pick up legit and safe software sometimes....
I agree 100%. I have NEVER had an infection on my home PC. I don't hardly ever visit questionable sites, and on the very rare occasion that I do, I definitely don't click on any popups or links or download or install anything from that site. About 4 months ago I did get something trying to come in, but my active protection software notified me (AntiVir, BOClean, Arovax Shield, BHR 4.5 with XP Pro SP2) and it was stopped. I'm looking for software for my neighbor who hasn't had his DSL internet connection turned on yet (Monday), so I'm trying to find protection for him before he goes online. How is AVG with Vista? I've used AntiVir with Vista, and that seemed OK, but I usually recommend and install AVG with total novice PC users because it's easier to use and understand, and AntiVir's 'popup' every couple of days tends to freak out the unaware user....
