I am working on a friends computer that was seriously infected. I ran into several problems trying to clean it. At first it would boot ok, but would not browse the internet. I downloaded superantispyware and it detected and removed 400+ instances of infections. I ran a few others (spybot, avg) in addition to SAS. During one reboot it would BSOD with a 0x0000007b (0xf78aa524) stop error. I couldn't even boot into safe mode. After researching this, I found I had a corrupt boot.ini file. I booted into the recovery console from an install CD and rebuilt the file. The system booted just fine after that but still gives me the same stop error when trying to boot into safe mode. I am unable to run any anti-spyware programs that are currently installed while getting the error: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item". The .exe files no longer have their appropriate icons which have been replaced by the windows blue and white folder looking icon (can't remember what they call that icon). My av and firewall work fine but any anti-spyware will not run including windows defender, spybot, sas, etc.

I went to the sticky to clean the system and run the programs recommended to post here. SAS ran and found one trojan, trojan.agent/gen-fraudload. It rebooted my system after cleaning it but upon reboot I was unable to rerun the program to get the log file due to previously mentioned error.

I then went to Malewarebytes. It installed, updated, I clicked quick scan, it started to prepare for the scan then it just went away without even scanning. Something must have stopped it that is preventing the other programs from running.

I was able to run the other programs and am attaching those logs.

Any help would be great and I would like to thank you in advance for any help given.

Your SafeBoot registry key needs repairs. We will deal with this later. But check to see if these registry keys exist:
    HKey_Local_Machine\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\minimal
    HKey_Local_Machine\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\network
Tell me what values are listed under minimal

First put Combo where we ask you to install it which is on your desktop, not in a folder on your desktop as you have it here:
    c:\documents and settings\Owner\Desktop\ANTI-SPYWARE TOOLS\ComboFix.exe

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Now use windows explorer to find and delete:
    c:\program files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware11 --second copy
    C:\\windows\\freddy49.exe
C:\Program Files\georgehis --> unless you know what this is!!
    C:\WINDOWS\fdgg34353edfgdfdf
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp\{5809e7cf-4dcf-11d4-9875-00105ace7734}

Now see if you can run the other scans.

Next run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Now download and install:
    Java Runtime 6

I am including screenshots of the registry keys and an install error of SAS.

The registry keys do exist and there is no value set though. I reran combofix from the proper location. I did get a success when I merged the fixME.reg file.

I found and deleted all the files you mentioned but could not find the:

    c:\\windows\\freddy49.exe

I did find a lot of freddy49.exe.***log files. the *** indicates misc numbers.

I did uninstall SAS but it would not install into its default folder and I am including that error. I installed it in a different folder (SUPER) and actually was able to run it after the reboot and got the log that I am including.

    Thanks!

Your logs are clean. You can go ahead and delete anything related to freddy!

You only need to use add/remove programs to uninstall:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6

    Then reboot and install:
    Java Runtime 6

You need to post in the software forum regarding your missing safe mode reg. key values.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real-time protection. They are useful as backup scanners. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore ato create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
