Regarding my new Dell system, XP Pro, I'm getting a minimum of 4 to 5 items that Ad-Aware refers to as "critical objects" after just a minute or so on the web. I never had this with my old system. I could go a week and maybe once in a while get 2 critical items after running Ad-Aware. Can I get some help in deleting what ever is tracking me? FYI, I've cleaned up as much as I know how using such tools as Dell-Decrapifier and CCleaner.

    Hi

What criticals is Ad-Aware finding, please post what items its highlighting.... Ad-Aware is very over zealous in highlighting especially Tracking Cookies as Critical Objects, these are normal occurances and part and parcel of surfing the net.

While I've deleted most of them, the one that keeps showing up is as follows:

    software\microsoft\directdraw\mostrecentapplication name

Regarding my old system where I hardly ever got "critical objects', I also ran Spotbot, SpywareGuard and Spyware Blaster. Perhaps that is why I rarely got this stuff.

Those in the MRU ( Most Recently Used ) listing are not really bad, they just highlight most recently used applications or files that you or the system has opened, not normally gained those MRUs in the Criticals listing on Ad-Aware, normally located in the Negligible lists.

DirectDraw will re-populate that MRU registry key as iexplore.exe is one item that registers in that location, on each opening.

Possible that Spybot when run deletes automatically the MRU list or doesnt even register them as a threat ( dont use SpyBot so not fully upto speed on its features )

Thanks for the help, Halo. I just added SpywareBlaster and that seemed to block all the crap that Ad-Adware kept picking up after just a minute or so on the web.

Not sure if you're referring to the slowness of my system mentioned in a prior post, but if so, this is what I did to resolve the issue. After doing a system recovery back to my original software (only a week old at the time), I reinstalled all malware programs one at a time, testing between each install, trying to locate the program the negatively effected my system's performance. As it turned out, I reloaded all programs and the slowness never returned. As a result, I have no idea what the problem was. One thing is for sure, though, and that is my very small Win '98 system that I replaced was quicker than this new XP Pro system which has a 3.06 processor, 1GB RAM, and a 160 hard drive. I never dreamed this would be the case. FYI, Dell has offered another system or a refund but since there us virtually no support for Win 98, I guess I'll just keep this one. If you have any suggestions, I'd be glad to hear them. Thanks for your prior help, Matt!

It does seem a little odd that its running slow. I assume dell provided you with an xp licence, you could try formatting the computer using a normal xp cd and deleting the 'dell' partitions and puttng a proper clean install on the computer, Im not sure if theres anything in the warranty about deleting their partition but I do it all the time with dell boxes at work and they all work fine. I was a little surprised at the amount of crap they install on them (2 weeks a go with an inspiron something) and how persistant they are about trying to make you use AOL or tiscalli.

I may just have them send me another machine to see if that is any quicker with perhaps a little bigger processor of 3.2. What do you think, Matt?

3,06 ghz isn't bad at all! its way better than mine lol. if its all free then theres no harm in letting them send you a new one and seeing if its any better
