I just installed AntiVir to replace my last antivirus app. It's working great so far except for the annoying popup every once in a while that notifies you about an upgrade.

Is there anyway to get rid of it? I can't find it in the settings. If not, can I block it with my firewall or will that screw up the whole thing?

I also tried AntiVir and was annoyed by the pop-ups. The advice from the AntiVir forum pretended it was no big deal and was the cost for getting it free.
I researched and could not find any way to get rid of the constant pop-ups.
There is no pop-up for AVG or Avast.

Finally removed AntiVir from my system.

Now once a month I download it, scan, and remove it.

Good luck in finding out how to remove the pop-ups.

I blocked the notify with my firewall. There is a seperate thing for it. If it doesn't screw up the antivir, I'll consider it a success. :) If it screws with it, I'll unblock and deal I guess.

    Thanks for the response.

If anyone has any answers, let me know.

    Hi LauraR,

The free version AntiVir Personal Edition Classic is a pretty good product but let's face it; it is nagware - it's not actually freeware. Avira presents their upgrade advertisement (a.k.a the upgrade pop-up or nag screen) periodically in an effort to try to get the "freebie" users to upgrade from the free Classic version.

This "Avnotify nag screen" is also used by your AntiVir to provide the "Virus Info" when you click on the icons located on Guard Page, Scan GUI and Alert GUI. According to the AntiVir developers "any attempt at blocking, disabling or prevention of avnotify.exe will also disable that virus info feature as well."

Side Note: I don't know if the following trick still works because I haven't actually tested AntiVir in a while; but I'm only aware of one method that used to (stressing the words "used to") work and it was for for Windows XP Professional Users Only:

    (1) Control Panel >Adm Tools > Local Security Policy
    (2) Now under Software Restriction Policy node create a new "Path Rule"
    (3) Give the path of avnotify.exe and make it disallowed.

Important Note Here: Regarding this "trick" - Once again this used to work for WinXP Pro users ONLY and I have no idea if it is still applicable nowadays. The only side effect that occurred (last time I tried it) was that users would see a warning in system event log for every time the avnotify got accessed.

As far as I know, the only other way to successfully stop the AntiVir upgrade "Avnotify nag screen" is to purchase a license for AntiVir Personal Edition Premium or use another anti-virus program besides AntiVir Personal Edition Classic.

    Good Luck!

IMHO, the nag screen is a small price to pay for quality FREE virus protection. AntiVir is consistently rated one of the best AV apps available, free or paid, and has been for years. The nag screen doesn't slow anything down and simply clicking OK closes it. Yeah, it's annoying, for the whole 3 seconds that it's on the screen. Big whoop.

Thanks Compuable. I tried to go through it and I'm not confident enough to go through that. I got to the one step and then it seemed like maybe I could screw things up.

Guess I'll keep the popup, unless it annoys me enough to make me go to AVG or something.

OPh, anytime Laura... My pleasure, really.

I forgot to mention this earlier, but years ago I bought a program called Buzof Annoying Windows Eliminator from Basta Computing, Inc. that closes windows that the user doesn't like. Basically, what the program does is - it enables users to automatically answer, close or minimize just about any recurring window including popup messages, prompts, and almost all dialog boxes.

I love using it because it not only closes "popups" but also just about any window that you don't want to open. Anytime a program error or window or internet window like the annoying "Would you like Windows to Automatically Save the Form Entries?" and such - I just ZAP it with the aptly named "Buzof" once and I never see it again!

Sometimes I even use it for "security" reasons; like if I don't want a certain document or program to run. Although the Basta Computing site does not mention this particular usage; I also use it in order to immediately and automatically close certain programs, files and windows - for privacy reasons. Since it simply closes such windows without any obvious notice (to whoever might be trying to access these programs or files) there is no warning at all - the window just closes and that's it!

I think it cost around $15 bucks when I downloaded it several years ago in like 1997 or '98 so. I believe it has been updated/upgraded a few times since then; however the old version still works well on almost any program. I certainly got my moneys worth because it has worked flawlessly with every Windows OS from '95 to XP.

I usually go for freeware alternatives; but this Buzof utility was well worth the 15 bucks I paid for it; considering the time and aggravation and hassles it saves me from. It is truly one of those utilities that once you use it; you soon can’t figure out how you lived without it! ;)

    Good Luck!

When the automatic update is working.

    When, being the key word.
