Hello, I'm in a pickle. I'm aware of other threads, but mine would be unique. Just recently, probably less that a week ago, I got hit with pop-ups asking me to install Antivirus 2009. Of course, I don't, but I try to exit the pop-ups by pressing cancel or "x" and a download pop-up pops up asking me to install A9installer. I don't, and after close that, all's fine until a couple minutes later, they pop back up. I'm not sure if this is related one bit, but I'm also getting Internet Explorer Script Errors popping up more frequently, and the URLs it lists are sites I've never been to.

Here's the unique thing, I've done the RUN & READ ME FIRST steps, all but the ComboFix step, and all for a good reason. I'm aware that ComboFix could ruin your computer if you don't take the proper steps to Windows XP Setup Disks. That's the main problem, for me, in aiding in fighting these horrible malwares. For one, I don't have my original Windows XP installation disk. Two, I know you can use formatted floppy disks after downloading the program from Microsoft, but, as it turns out, my floppy drive doesn't work(interestingly enough, either way, I haven't used floppy disks in, about, ten years anyway). Hence, it probably wouldn't be a good idea to us ComboFix at all. So, I'm asking, is there anything else I can do, like an alternate method of tackling this problem, cause I've done the whole SuperAntiSpyware, Spybot, Malwarebytes and MGStools bit in that order, following every step by step down to a dot(running CCleaner, manually removing folders from Program Files, and Add or Remove option). I'm desperate and in need of help. If you want, I can post some of the logs I got from the other programs. Thank you!

Running ComboFix isn't going to hurt your system. The option to install the Recovery Console is just an alternative way to assist in removing malware. It's not required that you install this so I would recommend proceeding and attaching the requested logs once complete.:)

Thanks for the reply. I'm wary because of what happened to my dad's computer when he tried to run ComboFix without having any Window XP Setup Disks. He said something about it automatically downloading Recovery Console, and after it was finished with the steps, it rebooted the system. When it came back on, nothing would load. The desktop was completely free of any icons, start button and taskbar. The only thing that remained was the wallpaper. He asked me if I could do anything. I went over to take a look at it and discovered that the ONLY way you could access any programs was through Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring up Windows Task Manager(which still worked). Under Aplications, I used the "New Task..." button on the bottom to scroll through the various programs(every program, folder and file was still in his computer, and could be accessed to some extent through that, which is how I saved some of his files onto CD). Other than that, everytime you reboot it, when it's about to load, it gives you the option of either choosing:

    - Microsoft Windows Recovery Console
    - Microsoft Windows XP Professional

If you don't choose in a few seconds, it automatically chooses the second option.

I did an F8 on the boot-up screen and there's a LONG list of various options to choose from:

    - Safe Mode
    - Safe Mode with Networking
    - Safe Mode with Command Prompt

    - Enable Boot Logging
    - Enable VGA Mode
    - Last Known Good Configuration (Your most recent setting that worked)
    - Directory Services Restor Mode (Windows domain controllers only)
    - Debugging Mode
    - Disable automatic restart on system failure

    - Start Windows Normally
    - Reboot
    - Return to OS Choice Menu

Do you think this problem is connected to the ComboFix, or something left over from the malware? Also, is there a way to fix this(for him), here's not hoping it will happen to me too when I try to use ComboFix! I hope you can help me, and thank you for your reply!!

I can't say exactly why that problem occurred but let me stress ComboFix and tools like this should not be ran without expert advice or without the presence of an advanced user.

With that being said, you can choose "No" to bypass the installation of the Recovery Console. Like I said, it is not required you install it. The only reason for installing it is to assist us in removing the malware if for some reason we can't get things to work in normal/safe mode.

It's up to you whether you want to proceed.:)
