Unable to send any scans because SpyBot, Malwarebytes etc will install but won't run. CombiFix won't run either. Same in Safe mode. Is there anything that can be done other than a complete re-install?

    Thanks

You can try running them in safe mode and or renaming them. You should be able to still run the MGTools.exe and attach that log.

Thanks Tim. Had some success getting scans to run - will post logs soon - Windows policy restrictions are making life very difficult (can't explore, task manager won't run etc etc) except in Safe mode.

    Thanks for your quick response

With perserverence finally got the scanners to run - scans attached. The PC is running much better now and normal commands like explore etc work now, including the Task Manager. Internet connection now works fine too. The only issue is that a white popup screen appears in the notification area - it has a little 'broken image' icon in the top left hand corner. This popup won't go away and appears soon after system restart.

Thanks very much for your help so far.

The good news is that it appears as though getting the scans to run has removed all the malware.

    Let's just do this:

    Use add/remove programs to uninstall:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6

Run this: Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now use windows explorer to see if these items still exist, and if so, delete them:
    c:\windows\system32\uacinit.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\UACaee8.tmp

Now reset msconfig to normal mode and reboot.

    Then download and install:
    Java Runtime 6

Tell me if you have any problems.

Thanks Tim. Followed your directions thank you - C:\Windows\system32\uacinit.dll was found and deleted. However the other file (C:\Windows\Temp\UACaee8.tmp) was not found.

Internet Explorer intially was very slow to load, but seems to be OK now.

The only issue with the machine now it seems is the white box/popup with the broken icon for an image in the notification area is still there.

Thanks very much for your help.

Can you right click the image and if so what do you get? Is it listed in your tray properties when you right click the tray?

Hi Tim and thank you. You couldn't right click the image. However I have resolved the issue by uninstalling all the tools we used (SuperAntiSpy, Malwarebytes etc) and the popup dissappeared.

The system is now running very well.

Thank you very much for all your help once again
