antivirus...please be patient

hi everyone ... lets just get this out of the way, i'm as pc illiterate as they get

all i want right now is a really good anitvirus... ugh, right? im sorry if this is a boring, overposted request. but my goodness there are so many out there and so many reviews and opinions it makes my head hurt. it doesn't need to be free, just the best option for how we use a pc.

background: im just a mom, i have 2 teen asperger boys who get into some hairy stuff online .... they go on many questionable sites, 'welcome' lots of unwanted bugs (yup, it was kinda sorta very embarassing when my friends husband cleaned the desktop and informed me some of the issues came from porn... proud mamma moment) ... yes, yes, i have had numerous informative, frusterating, threatening, supportive, smack my forehead and nail your arse to the wall conversations with them about this ...
i've done lots and lots of searching and reading on this site and find i quickly(let me emphasize QUICKLY) get lost in all the computer speak going on here...
so im hoping to get a little guidance from a community that appears to be well versed in all things im not
help me majorgeeks ... you're my only hope

Firstly, I strongly recommend going through our How to Protect Yourself From Malware tutorial - it's written by one of our resident anti-malware gurus and is very informative.

In that article chaslang points to several good free antivirus programs - you might wish to try more than one to find the one that best suits your needs, but pay attention to the caveat about only using one antivirus package at a time.
