I have gotten infected with the Antivirus Pro malware and I have tried to follow the Read & Run Me post to help get rid of it.

First off, the instructions on these pages are top-notch and professional! Thank you!

    OS: MS Windows XP SP2
    CPU: Intel x6800
    Memory 4gb ( I know it stops at about 3gb with a 32bit machine ;)
    Main Apps: Adobe, MS Office
Main use: Games, Writing, photoshop, movie creation

Followed the Run Me post then moved to the XP Cleaning Procedure... in the first Clean up Program is where things went awry. During the SuperAntiSpyware instructions I got to:

"If asked if you want to reboot, click Yes."

When I came back up I was unable to continue much of anything due to the error "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access this item" so no logs

Internet is disabled so I wanted to go to that next step to fix it. (I am using a thumb drive to copy files back and forth.)

I moved on to the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware step... same error "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access this item" So no logs.

Next tried Combofix... it seemed to start with a progress bar but then stopped. so no logs

Ran RootRepeal and attaching that log

Ran MGTools and attaching those logs (nice tool :)

I appreciate any direction some can help me with...thank you.

Now download and save this XPsp3bu.exe to your C:\ root folder. You must do this properly. Now run the XPsp2bu.exe program by double clicking on it. You may or may not notice a quick flash of a black window. This is normal. The program runs quickly and just extracts some files we need.

Please double-click the RootRepeal.exe previously downloaded.

    * Select File then Scan
    * On the Select Drives form select drive [ insert drive infected here ] by "ticking" the box for drive [insert drive here] and click OK
    * When the scan is complete - highlight each of the following file(s) (one at a time if more then one is listed) by left clicking it. Then use right mouse click and select the Wipe File option only for each file.
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\eventlog.dll
    * After Wiping all files, immediately reboot your pc!

Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract+ avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * -Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.
    -
Now run Ccleaner to clean out only temp files and nothing else!

Now try to run the other scans that you could not run and attach any logs you can produce.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\Avenger.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    TimW,

    Thank you for your reply!

Ran the XPsp3bu.exe and saw the black box flash up.

after using rootrepeal to wipe only "C:\WINDOWS\system32\eventlog.dll" per the instructions, I rebooted.

when I come up I am given a choice to log into either Al user or Guest user at the "Welcome" screen. Both of which log on then immediately log me off.

At this point I cannot get back on. I suspect I will need to do something in safe mode :cry

    Update (not a good one)

Tried to come up in Safe Mode and got the "Welcome" screen again. This time with Al User or Administrator User. Again neither worked. Seemed to try and log in then log immediately out.

Do you have your xp cd? If so, boot to the cd and enter the recovery console. Once there, do this:

    1. Insert the Windows XP bootable CD into the computer.
    2. When prompted to press any key to boot from the CD, press any key.
    3. Once in the Windows XP setup menu press the "R" key to repair Windows.
    4. Log into your Windows installation by pressing the "1" key and pressing enter.
    5. You will then be prompted for your administrator password, enter that password.
    6. Copy the below two files to the root directory of the primary hard disk. In the below example we are copying these files from the CD-ROM drive letter, which in this case is "e." This letter may be different on your computer.

    copy e:\i386\eventlog.dll c:\windows\system32\eventlog.dll

    7. Once both of these files have been successfully copied, remove the CD from the computer and reboot.

    I may gotten this working....

First I used a Boot CD to come up in Win XPPE. Opened the Registry info and fixed the USERINIT entry of Winlogon. This allowed me to login!!

To fix the registry from a bootable CD I found instructions here

Then used your avenger list (thank you)... including the log. When I was in WIN PE, I deleted some manually since I could and didnt know if I was going to come up properly (that is why some of the deletes failed).

To get around the "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access this item" error, I went into safe mode and "took ownership" of SuperAntiSpyware and MB.

Here is the link to Take Ownership

Ran SASW in safe mode then "repaired" the internet connection. Attaching logs.

Came up in regular Ran MB (had one infection). Attaching logs.

Updated SASW to the latest (now that the internet was working again) and re-ran it. Nothing detected.

Tried to run ComboFix again, but it locked at installing Recovery Console.

Updated AVG and did a full scan... no hits.

Ran out of time to work on it at that point....

Back this morning and ran MGTools to get a fresh log.

Running RootRepeal as I type, so will attach that log also.

At this point everything seems to be running, although it seems slower in general. some examples:
    • Right-clicking a file in windows explorer takes about 5 seconds to pop up the menu.
    • Starting Firefox takes a good 30 seconds
    • Even as I type, letters are delayed in being sent.

    * After Wiping all files, immediately reboot your pc!

Now download the latest version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one. Run the exe and attach the new MGLogs.zip as well as a new RootRepeal log.

Re-ran RootRepeal this morning, and didn't see any of those files. Attaching the log.

Downloaded MGTools and ran it... also attached.

Again, thank you for your help... it is much appreciated!

Your logs are clean. You only need to remove these old versions of Java:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11"
    Java(TM) 6 Update 5

    Reboot and download and install:
    Java Runtime 6

Are you having any other malware related issues?
