Antivirus pro popup

I will begin cleaning my daughters laptop this weekend. I planned on bakibackingng up her files / pictures to an external drive. I'm concerned about transferring her problem to another computer via the drive.

Any recommendations rev safekeeping of the backup?

I know she is using windows 8, but that's all the info I have other than a picture of the popup in a desperate text message. new husband bought her Norton 360. they downloaded the updated database and thought they we're done.

I may format the laptop as daughter said all she needs are her pictures. I just wanted to know if:
1. your familiar with said virus?
2. Is it save to copy any of her files except any exe files to my external hard drive prior to starting the process.

thanks so much, already saved just received the laptop back today. I will check for a restore drive as she did not bring any CD's. I should be good or is it possible the restore drive could have been infected too.

also I saved the Norton download onto my external. should I load that up or have her red download all software she has added
