Hi. I just joined. I am an older person and anything that I know I had to teach myself, so please have patience. I have Avira antivirus free installed on my computer. Today I received a message saying it wouldn't load because of a configuration error and to try to reinstall. So I went to add/remove programs and received a message there that Avira may have been uninstalled. I am the only one with access to this computer, and I certainly didn't uninstall it, so what is going on? thanks,
    sheena:(

Geminione, thanks for the reply. Yes, I did try to download Avira. Anything I download from them is always very slow. The download failed, I got a message saying it ended abruptly. So now I am downloading another program, spydoctor, which I had several months ago, paid for, and had to uninstall when I started having problems with it. I liked Avira best, but I don't have hours to give to keep trying downloads. Any suggestions much appreciated. I do have a dial up, with an accelerator, but I have the accelerator turned off as I have been told it could somehow interfere with the download. I have trouble getting downloads to complete successfully. Is this because I have a dial-up? So much to learn, such a short lifespan.

Hi, are you using 'SpyDoctor' or Spyware Doctor? Neither are antivirus applications! They are antimalware applications. I'm not sure about spydoctor, but spyware doctor does come with a version that includes antivirus.

    Please be specific.

Also, if it is SpyDoctor, I've seen where a lot of people have problems with it.

    I would recommend this link:

How to protect yourself from malware.

It will give you several suggestions. There are other AVs out there beside Avira.

sounds like you have 2 issues at work here. yes dialup can time out if your phone line has noise on it. one way to solve is to find a friend with a highspeed connection and download on theirs burn it to a cd/dvd depends on what your system can handle, and then try to install off the disk. second sounds like you might have an infection of some kind. so go to the malware/spyware forem and find out what you need to run and download those applications and run them to find out if your infected.

Thanks to Ed, Geminiione, and laura for your aid.
Ed, you were right, it was a trial version. I had researched so many antibugs before choosing Avira that it got mixed up in my memory.:-o Geminiione, I am again trying to download Avira, as we speak, from this, the Geeks, site. So far going well and faster than usual. I am not running Spy dr or the other, Laura. I use Spybot for malware, and Avira for virus and rootkits, etc. I found that a big problem that got increasingly worse was my accelerator program. It caused my computer to freeze, among other things, and finally, caused freezing even offline. I uninstalled it today and the freeze problem has gone away. I don't see much difference in time, either. Would like to see discussion on these accelerator programs. Thanks again, all. Sheena
