Hi there. Just joined site as I have been wanting to determine if my PCs are protected as effectively as I can get them.

I have read through the 'How to protect yourself from malware' --> http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=44525'

and it states to only have one antivirus, realtime blocker and firewall in use otherwise they can effect performance.

I had a few issues with viruses last year and having read a few reviews installed both:

    Kaspersky Antivirus 2009

    and

    Webroot Antivirus with Spysweeper

I am running the standard windows firewall.

Having read the above document I now see that I need to change what I am doing and so wanted to ask if anyone knew which of the above was the better option to continue with or should I just finish both and go with one of the free ones from the articles list.

Free is for me good as I need to ensure I protect a number of machines. The renewal for both products is in a couple of months so not a big issue to dump and not renew.

If you are able to recommend a 'set' of products which would best work for me to run to be best protected that would be great.

PCs are all Windows XP (some Home and some Pro versions)
All have latest windows SP's loaded.

I am sure others have asked but wanted to get some opinions based on your experiences.

    Many thanks

I have moved your thread to software considering you are not having any actual malware problems, rather just questioning anti virus.

Hi, yes, you should definitely completely uninstall one of your programs. Where you go from there is up to you.

Personally, I'd probably go with Kaspersky out of the the two for the rest of the subscription. The free AV's recommended in the thread you linked to are very good. I used Avira for a very long time and always liked it. You'll get good protection from that and the others...without paying.

Thanks for the reply, will look at the AV you specified. Cant get better than a personal recommendation. What S/W do you use for firewall and realtime block software do you use alongside this?

Checked out you photos aswell, really nice. I am a photographer over here in the UK!

    Cheers

    Hi

I'm actually running Windows 7 now, so have changed out my security software. I'm paying for ESET's NOD32 (which is a great AV) and running Window's Firewall (which has been much improved in Vista and Win7). Also, I use Webroot's Spysweeper for Antimalware.

While using XP, I ran Avira AV, Comodo Firewall (also excellent), and Spysweeper Antimalware. (I would not recommend using Windows Firewall in XP)

(Thanks for checking out my photos also! :) Are you a professional photographer? I just do it as a hobby...as I'm sure is evident. :-D)
