Hello...I've apparently picked up a nasty virus from a Facebook link. I have Norton Internet Security, and yesterday, I suddenly got several messages relating to various viruses. According to Norton, said viruses are now quarantined and my computer is secure, but I'm still having problems. Norton prompted me to restart my computer, which I did, but it hasn't changed anything. Here's a list of what is currently in quarantine: '~.exe detected by SONAR', 'Safe Strip detected by virus scanner', 'CoreGuard Antivirus 2009 detected by virus scanner', 'lizkavd.exe detected by SONAR', 'Downloader detected by virus scanner'...As well, there is suddenly a program called 'AntivirusPro 2010' seemingly installed under my new programs. There are also 2 large red 'X's sitting on my taskbar which keeping popping up with the message "Your computer is infected! Windows has detected spyware infection!, etc" - I'm assuming this is simply malware and the message is BS. I have Windows XP Media Centre Edition, and I use IE (which is running with add-ons disabled for some reason...Again, this happened after I clicked that link on Facebook)...So - what the hell do I do?? I was going to use System Restore to restart to a safe point, but I'm not sure if that's going to solve the problem or not...Any advice? HELP!!!! :)

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:
    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

Hello! OK - I've completed all the steps in the 'Read Me' guide, except for the SuperAntiSpyware scan which didn't seem to work properly (at least per the instructions) Here's what happened when I tried to run that program:

Followed default settings for installation, icon was created on desktop. Double-clicked icon, program launches and comes to screen called ‘Application Maintenance’. It says to ‘Select the maintenance operation to perform’ and there are 3 selections: Modify (Change which application features are installed. Displays the Select Features dialog, which lets you configure individual features. Repair (Reinstall missing or corrupt files, registry keys and shortcuts. Preferences stored in the registry may be reset to default values.) or Remove (Uninstall SuperAntiSpyware Free Edition from this computer)…If I pressed Cancel to exit out of that screen, another window came up: 'Installation is not complete. If you quit the setup program now, the application will not be installed. You can run the setup program at a later time to complete the installation. To continue installing, click Resume. To quit the setup program, click Exit Setup' None of this was mentioned in the instructions, and I wasn’t sure what to do, so I skipped this step.

Also, when I ran Root Repeal, there were several messages that came up during the scan - I assumed they would be in the log when it was finished scanning, but it doesn't look like it. I'm sorry I didn't write them down, but I remember one saying that the program 'Couldn't scan Boot Sector'.

After completing all the different scans, several of my problems seem to have rectified themselves. My task manager, desktop picture and the Windows Security Centre in Control panel were all disabled, but they seem to be working fine now. The 2 red 'X's which were sitting on my taskbar have also disappeared. However, I find when I'm surfing the net and click on a link (especially through Google) I'm being redirected to a completely different site that what I intended. The sites all vary and it seems to be completely random. So it looks like my computer isn't totally clean yet.

I'm attaching all logs as requested.

Sounds to me like you ran the SUPERAntiSpyware Repair program not the scanner. Also you did not install it properly. Your logs show you tried to run it from F:\SASWINLO.dll You need to remember to install programs to their default suggested installation folders which is normally C:\Program Files\SUPERAntiSpyware.

Infact you also installed Malwarebytes incorrectly ( F:\\Malwarebytes' Anti- Malware\\mbam.exe ) you should uninstall it too and reinstall it properly). You should not be trying to install and run this programs from a removable device!!!

Uninstall SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes, then reboot. After reboot, reinstall them properly on the C Drive in the Program Files folder where they belong. Make sure you follow steps properly. SUPERAntiSpyware should automatically run when you install it. You should not have to even click on any icons on your Desktop.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 14

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment
Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below log:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!
