AntivirusXP2008.

    Hello Everyone, Got a little problem here. Been reading these forums and have not seen anything about this antivirus that I believe is a trojan.
    While doing some research an antivirus scan was begun, not of my doing. It claims to have found 2188 viruses on my computer. Of course it recommends to disinfect immediatly.
    About every ten seconds a little box appears and reminds me that there are 2188 viruses and that I should disinfect. When I check the status of this program it says the the realtime scan and the removal tool is deactivated. Several times I have attempted to remove from the control panel to no avail.
    Spyware, adware that I have are useless. Both recommended by this site.
    Has anyone dealt with this thing yet? How do I rid my computer of this monster?
    Oh, and if you want to register this trial program it will cost $49.95 on your credit card.
    Scary, very scary.

    hi Scoundrel ..

    1. Switch off system restore.

    2. Install and update the free version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.25 (FREEWARE WITHOUT Realtime Protection Module)

    3. Boot in the Safe Mode

    4. Run a full scan

    Done.

    While it will remove any malware saved in system restore, its not a viable first course of action, and why you ask, well malware in system restore wont do anything as it will need restoring to become active again, however if you flush SR first before starting malware removal steps you may end up with as a concequence of running malware steps corrupt your OS, so having an infected SR point is better than no SR point as you can at least start the malware removal steps again.

    Which is why what MarkT posted is best set of instructions to follow.
