My Dad's computer has been infamous for running programs slower and slower the longer since the system has been restarted. Running Spybot S&D and Adaware was of little help.

I've gone through the READ AND RUN ME FIRST proceedure in the hopes that it would locate any malware I was unable to find otherwise. Please let me know if any more cleaning needs to be done and if anything the scans found might have been responsible for the sluggish system.

SOme infections can cause things to slow down within a few minutes of startup. Conficker is one of those infections. You should make sure McAfee is up to date and then run a full scan on all disks. Let me know if it finds anything and tell me exactly what and where.

A problem that you do have is lack of sufficient memory. Your logs show the below.
You really should have twice this amount of memory to run properly.

Ad-Aware is of little use these days and not worth the resources it wastes. I suggest that you uninstall it.

Also you should uninstall this old version of Spybot: Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.5.2.20

Also you need to uninstall My Way Search Assistant as requested in step 1 of the READ & RUN ME.

Before we can continue, you must put your PC into Normal Startup mode with MSconfig as we requested in step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. You must not use MSconfig to control startups like this.

    Then you need to reboot.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip

McAfee wqas updated and a full scan was run.

    It yielded 2 results:
    Detection name: Exploit-1Table.a (Trojan)
    File: C:Documents and Settings/All Users/Application Data/McAfee/VirusScan/Quarantine/7d821221253c80.bup
    which was quarantined.

Detection name: RemAdm-ProcLaunch!171 (Potentially Unwanted Program)
    File: C:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-2702902988-532091868-1010675610-105\Dc1.exe
which was detected but no action was taken.

My Way Search Assistant is not listed in the Add/Remove Programs dialog box. It's possible that some remnants still remain after a poor attempt at disinfection (likely done long ago).

I'll update Spybot S&D and suggest that he replace AdAware with SuperAntiSpyware.

I had made a bad assumption that he was starting up in normal MSconfig mode. I had forgotten that I had disabled several programs that I was confident were unecessary for startup in order to attempt speeding his system up some months ago. This certainly helped so be aware that startup and computer use is now arduously slow (whereas before it was simply suspiciously slow).

You can do the below to remove this.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

As stated in step 1 of the READ & RUN ME,
You do have a load of junk that is not necessary to run at startup (not a topic for this forum since they are not malware) but your biggest bang would come from two things.
    1. doubling RAM to 1 GB
    2. uninstall McAfee and using something that is not such a massive resource hog.
If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
