Any free photoshop type programs?

Hello everyone,

Do any of you know of a free photoshop type program? I am not really trying to be cheap and not buy one,but i think i will only probably use it a couple times a year so if there is a free alternative it would make more sense then buying a program.

The GIMP(GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a good Open source alternative
paint.net is also good.

Irfanview, Faststone Image viewer, and Google Picasa are a few others.

Do any one here used paint.net.As I am not a user I don't know which is better paint.net OR GIMP.Your suggestions are welcome
