    Hi,
First of all, thank you for putting together this great free site to help mere mortals like me fix my PC. Whoever helps me fix my PC problems, perhaps you'll also let me know how I can make a donation to your site please. If you don't let me know within your reply, I'm liable to scoot off and forget once my problems are behind me.

    Problems that I am having:

PC slowed way down all of a sudden - no real warning unil it happened

The Microsoft Start-up 'jingle' sounds like it's been mangled through a handful of distortion filters

I can't use Skype any more because of the sound distortion

Connecting to the internet is now a long drawn out ritual of retrys until successful

In general, nothing seems to work as slick or as well as before. I have run various types of antivirus and antispware programs, but although some things were detected and dealt with, it seems to have had little effect in curing my PC.

I have done all the 'Read and Run Me First' Instructions and I am attaching the logs etc with this post, as required. Many thanks again for your help.

    Jane.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Whatever problems you are having are not due to malware. It could just be due to the choice of applications you are running. Did you problems begin after installing ZoneAlarm Security Suite on May 27th. Also I doubt the Advance System Advanced Registry Optimizer & Advanced System Optimizer 2.10 are doing much to improved things. Did you but these or are they just the trial versions.

Let's remove a few unnecessary startups and some clutter from previous use of MSconfig.

Start by uninstall CounterSpy since it is only a trial and we are finished with it. Then delete the below folders which may be left behind:
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sunbelt Software
    C:\Program Files\Sunbelt Software

    Also delete the below folder:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jane\Application Data\SpywareBot

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ccApp] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe"
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_01\bin\jusched.exe"
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
    Now reboot in normal mode

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.
    1. GetRunKey
    2. ShowNew
    3. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Hi,
Thanks very much for helping me out. To answer your questions; I downloaded Zonelabs antivirus to help me get rid of infections that I thought were affecting my computer and slowing it down. I previously had TrendMicro antivirus software on my PC, but around the time that my pc started acting up, TrendMicro started to malfunction, wouldn't run and wouldn't update properly. I lost faith in it and downloaded Zonelabs.

I honestly can't remember whether I bought the Registy optimizer or not. I've tried so many things e.g. free edition of AVG antivirus and Spybot to clean up my PC that I've fogotten just what I bought and what came free. I made a big mistake in downloading Spywarebot - having mistaken it for SpyBot Search and Destroy. I uninstalled it once I realised my mistake, but I suspected that remnants were still around. Thanks for pointing them out to me.

I have followed your instructions and I have also attached the updated logs. How is my PC now? It does seem to run faster now although it's still pretty slow at start up compared to what it used to be like. I'm taking it that it's the Zonelabs software that's the likely cause of that now though. I can live with that no problem - and I'm going to trim the number of appilications on start up too.

The main problem though is that the sound is still badly distorted. The sound of the Microsoft start up jingle reverberating and distorting is enough to curdle milk!! I also can't listen to stuff on youtube or use skype because the sound distortion is so bad. As before, any help much appreciated - and by the way, you forgot to tell me how I can make a donation to our site.

    Kind Regards,
    Jane

This is not due to malware. You need to check into the effect of things that you are running. This dicussion belongs in the Software Forum but I will give you some steps to try so you can determine if there is any effect:
    1. Uninstall ZoneAlarm Security Suite to see if there is any change
    2. Stop and set to manual the below services to see the impact (I'll tell you how to do that below):
      • O23 - Service: CyberLink Background Capture Service (CBCS) (CLCapSvc) - Unknown owner - c:\APPS\Powercinema\Kernel\TV\CLCapSvc.exe
      • O23 - Service: CyberLink Task Scheduler (CTS) (CLSched) - Unknown owner - c:\APPS\Powercinema\Kernel\TV\CLSched.exe
      • O23 - Service: Creative Service for CDROM Access - Creative Technology Ltd - C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTsvcCDA.exe
      • O23 - Service: CyberLink Media Library Service - Cyberlink - C:\Program Files\CyberLink\Shared Files\CLML_NTService\CLMLServer.exe
      • O23 - Service: Generic Service for HID Keyboard Input Collections (GenericHidService) - Unknown owner - c:\APPS\HIDSERVICE\HIDSERVICE.exe
      • O23 - Service: Logitech Process Monitor (LVPrcSrv) - Logitech Inc. - c:\program files\common files\logitech\lvmvfm\LVPrcSrv.exe
Here is how to stop the services and set to manual (your could also uninstall the software if you can determine that you do not need it):

    • Click on Start, then Run ... type services.msc into the box that opens up, and press 'OK'.
    • On the page that opens, scroll down to CyberLink Background Capture Service (CBCS)
    • then right click the entry, select Properties and press Stop Service.
    • When it shows that it is stopped, next please set the Start-up Type to 'Manual' (write down their current startup type to restore later if necessary)
    • Now repeat the above to Stop and set to manual the below Services (if you do not find them or get any errors, just continue):
      • CyberLink Task Scheduler (CTS)
      • Creative Service for CDROM Access
      • CyberLink Media Library Service
      • Generic Service for HID Keyboard Input Collections
      • Logitech Process Monitor
    • Click OK until you get back to Windows.
Now reboot and see if there is any change to you problems! If not, you can reinstall ZoneAlarm and also set these service back to Automatic or whatever they were set to.

    Hi,
Thanks again for helping me out with your advice and my apologies for the delay with my feedback. I've stopped and set to manual all the services listed in your advice and rebooted, but unfortunately there was no improvement in sound quality. I've now set them back to how they were, as advised.

Fact is, I'm so relieved to learn from you that that my PC problems are not due to malware that I feel I can just about live with the sound problem. I'm also conscious of the fact that I'm taking up your time and the space of other people with more pressing problems in Malware Removal Forum when I should really be discussing this in the Software Forum. Could you transfer this thread to there for me, or would it be better if I reposted anew? In the meantime, I'm determined to get some dosh to you somehow for all the help you've given me.
    Regards,
    Jane

If that did not help, you will have to look into other things that you are running or into possible hardware issues or driver issues with your sound card.

You may want to try uninstalling ZoneAlarm Security Suite to see what happens. Or you could run MSconfig and select Diagnostic mode to see how your PC works in that mode. If sound seems okay in that mode, you could slowly enable items that were disabled in Diagnostic mode to find which item is causing your problem.
