    Hi all,

sorry, this is a copied post, i posted other one in wrong sections.

    Hope you are all well.

I'm looking for ideas. I have been given a computer tower from an office of a friend. I have reinstalled windows xp pro on it with oringinal key from tower, with his permission. I have also been given a modem (identical to mine) used by SKY customers in the UK, i think its 'netgear' modem.

Anyway, i thought i would use the tower to store stuff on, but thought there must be more that i can do with the tower than let it sit there and get wasted.

I wondered if maybe an extra modem could help with download speed for example, or a tower to make a home server kind of thing. Although that sound complicated, im willing to give things a go.

I just thought that with an identical extra modem and a tower doing nothing, i could make them more useful.

Any ideas would be great. Please remember im not a geek and so limited in computer knowledge :)

    Thank you in advance

    Hi andyman77,

what type of processor and RAM does the tower use?

You could always turn it into a "folding" rig and help scientists at Stanford University (and the MajorGeeks team) find cures for troubling diseases around the world :)

Also, i'm not completely certain on this, but i'm pretty sure 2 modems wont speed up 1 internet connection. It may possible to utilize 2 seperate internet connections with 2 seperate modems and increase performance that way.

    hi there,

from what i can gather its Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz 2.39GHz, 1.99GB of Ram. Not very good i know but maybe usfull for something.

I was interested in you second idea, about a possible performace boost with the 2 modems, if you could explain more.

    Thanks

    Andy

As I said, I'm not certain on this, so please correct me anyone where needed.

but i'm pretty sure you can have two Network Interface Cards (NIC's) plugged into your PC in the PCI slots (you may already have one integrated into your motherboard).

Then you can just pay for any two internet connections from your favorite ISP. One can be used as a purely uploading/downloading connection. the other can be your general-purpose connection and wont need as much bandwidth as your U/D connection. Or you can go all out and have 2 high-bandwidth connections.

On the PC they would most likely show up as Network connections 1 & 2, depending on how you set them up. I'm not sure of what settings you would have to set up to set your default connection and all of the other little settings that would be involved. We do have a Networking forum here for that however ;)

And the P4 is an oldie, but I've loved every single P4 I've owned. They perform very well for single-core CPU's.
