Any Ideas What Is Causing This Crash?

    Hi all,

I upgraded my PC about 9 months ago from an Intel 4690K to an AMD Ryzen 2600X and since then it has been crashing whenever I play some games, particularly Subnautica. I'll post full PC specs at the end, below.

The problem is, whenever I play Subnautica, after a random amount of time (usually 15-30 ish minutes) the PC crashes: the screen goes a sort of dark green with the audio making that horrible square wave "your PC just crashed" noise for about 5 seconds. After this the screen goes black and the noise stops, the PC is still on but the LED's on the GPU are flashing on/off every second and I have to either press and hold the power button or just press the restart button for the PC to restart. It sometimes crashes in other games but Subnautica is by far the worst offender.

My gut instinct tells me it's either a GPU-related issue, a motherboard issue (it was second hand...) or a RAM issue since it seems to sometimes default back to stock speeds every now and then (I haven't yet noticed exactly when this happens but it's infrequent). When I made the upgrade I also did a clean install of Windows 10 on the also new PNY CS900 SSD (upgraded my 120GB Samsung SSD to this 500GB PNY one).

I updated the mobo BIOS to the most recent one about 3 months ago in an effort to fix this, but it hasn't helped, it still crashes. I realise now that I have version F50 but F51 released just a few days ago. Not sure if it's worth a shot or not.

Anyways, any help or ideas would be much appreciated!

    Specs:
AMD 2600X (stock speeds, no overclocking)
AMD Radeon RX480, ASUS ROG Strix 3-fan version (had this since before my recent upgrade)
Gigabyte X470 Aorus Ultra Gaming (2nd hand off of eBay...)
    2x8GB Corsair Vengeance LPX @ 3200 MHz
500GB PNY CS900 SSD (OS drive)
    1TB Seagate Barracuda
    2TB Seagate Firecuda hybrid SSHD

Might be a TDR 0x116/0x117, one's a GPU logjam and GPU reset, the other's similar but fails to reset the GPU.

Study the info and then run the tool here, zip the required folder and attach it to a reply. I'll try to make some sense of the logs and check any crashdumps

Thanks for that, though it seems the .zip file is too large to attach here in a reply. It's almost 5 MB, can't remember what the max file size on this forum is.

Hmm, might be as small as 3MB, I rarely attach anything larger than a screenshot so I really don't know, sorry.

MSinfo32.nfo and all .*.dmp files are what I'd like to begin with, see if you can zip those and attach, or find a free host, like MS OneDrive maybe, in a publicly accessible folder?

Going from an Intel platform to an AMD platform is not an "upgrade". In effect, it essentially is a totally different computer.

Sadly, you didn't. I don't see the power supply listed or the case.

To me, my first thoughts are power and heat.

Because EVERYTHING inside the computer case depends on good, clean, stable power, and especially when I see various unexplained hardware issues, I always want to know I am supplying good power. So I swap in a known good PSU to see if the problems remain, or go away.

The case maters because it is the case's responsibility to provide and ensure there is an adequate supply of cool air flowing through the case. Sadly, we don't know your temps either. Gaming is very demanding on cooling resources. So what are your temps?

@satrow no worries. Turns out the TDR 0x116/0x117 thing you posted before was all I needed to find the fix. I found a post of someone with this issue that fixed it by underclocking their GPU with MSI afterburner. I did this and have now been playing Subnautica for several hours with no problems (touch wood)! Thanks for the help.

@Digerati Okay, true, but to me going from a CPU with 4 cores 4 threads to one with 6 C 12 T is certainly an improvement, and to me that means an upgrade, though perhaps I'm using the term incorrectly.
Sorry, I knew I'd miss something out. Not that it's necessary now that the problem is fixed but my power supply is an Antec TruePower Classic 650W 80+ Gold and case is an NZXT H440 with 3 120mm intake fans in the front and a 140mm exhaust fan at the back.
Generally when gaming, HWmonitor shows that temps rarely exceed 80*C on the GPU or 70*C on the CPU. The CPU cooler is the Thermalright Macho Rev B., which is a beast of an air cooler imo.

LOL I was really just giving you a hard time! ;) No doubt that is a big improvement. And I am not sure there is a better term. This is especially true since I have said for years, a quality case and quality PSU form the foundation for a computer that can support years of evolving "upgrades"!

I just note going from an Intel 4690K to an AMD Ryzen 2600X involves much more than swapping CPUs. It also required getting a new motherboard. And since the 4690K required DDR3 RAM and the 2600X requires DDR4, you had to get new RAM too. So a new motherboard, new CPU and new RAM is basically a new computer since the rest are essentially peripherals.

Anyway, I am glad satrow's suggestion worked and you got your problem sorted out. Thanks for posting your followup! :)

@Digerati Oh dear, it's sometimes hard to tell on forums xD You got me thinking though and after Googling "upgrade" it did actually specify "replacing a product with a newer version of the same product", but yeah I couldn't then think of a more accurate synonym.

Absolutely, I made sure not to cheap out on the PSU or case. Whilst the case doesn't have the best airflow, it's decent enough whilst staying quiet and having lots of space for ease of building and upgrade potential. Plus, 650W of PSU should keep me going for a while longer, and this line of Antec PSU's has been generally very well reviewed by people that rip them apart for thorough inspection.

Yeah true, definitely a new PC by this point, just the same storage, power and box.

And me too, man I was stuck on that for months. Thanks again both of you!
