About 2 month ago i was driving around 30mph when a woman pulled out from behind a parked car and i had to swerve and in doing so hit a curb..

I'm guessing that was the cause of what i recognised a week or so later..

When i am driving and i turn my steering wheel slightly to the left all i hear is a clunk clunk clunk which gets louder the faster i go but it ony does this on the left side (the side i hit the curb on) if my wheel is in any other direction there is no noise..

I had an audi and a ford mechanic take a look who cannot find anything wrong with the car at all and thought it may have been a wheel bearing, so £60 worse off and that has not made any difference! what could this be!? I want to sell the car so the last thing i want to do is spend more money on it and not getting anywhere, i hope somebody can help!

    Thanks, Chris

did they check your CV Boots to see if they were torn? could be your axel shafts are wearing out. That boot protects them and if they get water and crap in there they will start doing that.

I'm not too sure but my brother in law and friend are mechanics too who have also both had a look at it, so i will ask them to make sure that they have..

Explain this to me aswell..my bro in law said it could be the gearbox, and somet about draining it and putting thicker oil in..what the hell as the gearbox got to do with this noise im experiencing coming from the front wheel? Excuse me as im clueless when it comes to cars :)

It could be a load of things that are impossible to check for over the internet you need to get it jacks and check for play in all the ball joints, steering rack, the power steering servo's,ride height, check for broken suspension springs, warped or broken brake discs ect.

One of the phantom problems can be a misshaped tire after hitting curb. Even though the tire when spinning in a straight plane is balanced and the balance machine reads its perfectly balanced, when the wheel is turned the tire is thrown out of balance or starts to wobble like a giro. The clunking can be caused by any play in afore mentioned components.

Almost impossible to check for and often overlooked by mechanics.

The easy check fix is to swap the wheels over on the front,no need to swap tires.

I have a A4 I have a decent Audi mech he told and showed me that the only way to look for things like that is to put it on a frame lift and run, you need one guy at the wheel and one under the car. I have had 3 wheel bearing changed out so far, they do not clunk thry have low growl that gets louder over time and do not favor left or right motion.
