Any real problems from disabling Windows_Presentation_Foundation plug-in?

Discussion in 'Software' started by conceptualclarity, Sep 3, 2013.

  1. I have found that my browsers run a lot faster with Flash Player disabled. I suspect plug-ins collectively are a major burden on old systems like mine, so I prefer to disable a lot of them.

I have researched Windows Presentation Foundation plug-in. It seems mostly for developers, but I see it has some functionality with multi-media presentations. However, let's get down to the brass tacks. Has any non-developer user found they can't do something they want to do because they don't have this plug-in or don't have it enabled?

    Windows XP
    Home Edition
    Version 2002
    32-bit
    Service Pack 3

    Dell DIMENSION DIM2400
    Intel(R)
    Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.66GHz
2.66 Ghz. 2.00 GB of RAM
    Hard Drive Size 111.72 GB
    Free Space 37.3 GB

    I always remove/disable it.

On my backup machine, an old Dell laptop running XP SP3, I don't have any .NET installed.

If you are using firefox i would disable the Plugin-Contaner.exe it will speed up firefox. All Plugin-Contaner.exe is just a crash reporter for flash player.

    Type dom.ipc in the filter.

And then Right click any where in the white blank section and in the pop up click highlight New then highlight boolean then add these below.

    dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.npctrl.dll
    dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.npqtplugin.dll
    dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.npswf32.dll
    dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.nptest.dll

disable all the ones that say boolean turn them to false. Then close firefox and then reopen and check to see if the Plugin-Contaner.exe is in the Task manager.

Plugin-Contaner.exe is nothing but a waste of RAM and does slow down firefox every once a while.

There are probably a lot of plugins that was space and Ram and is probably not needed.

Unless it is causing problems, I would leave it. Without it, you will not be able to use XBAPs and probably Silverlight content.

I also don't understand the disdain for .NET? The days of native language applications are dwindling, and without .NET, you cannot run any c#, VB.NET, or C++.NET application, nor any xaml enriched web content. Not to mention the loss of WPF, which is incredible for user interfaces.

With the exception of the first time run, .NET applications run as fast or faster than native code applications.

  6. I got busy and lost track of this thread. Thank you all for your answers, especially Goldenskull. I have indeed recognized Plugin-Container.exe as burdensome.
