I have a question for you. I've been a union electrician for 16 years but am now completly interested in computers and changing careers. 2 friends of mine in the business have recommended VB courses as a good way to get your foot in the door without a 4 year degree. Any opinions about this this?
    Thanks,

well, getting into "computers" is a pretty broad statement. What part of computing field would you like to break into? what are your interests?

if you are interested in programming and particularly internet based stuff (VB can give you the ability to make internet apps and web pages etc.) then VB is a good way to go.

There's an update. VB does interest me, but in the search for schools, I have found a Microsoft certified training center near by. (NW Chicago suburb) They offer network training courses (my original choice) that run 30 weeks and prepare you for various certs. including MCSA, CCNA, and MCP. I can't afford the $5000-7500 since I'm currently laid off, but I'm thinking of re-financing and taking a home equity loan with it to take equity out of the home to live off of until the years end and pay for courses. Prior to this, I've been a union electrician for 16 years. Any opinions on this careeer change and networking in general?
    Thanks in advance,
    Jerry

Have computers.. need network.. That's the name of the game. Regardless of the operating environment. *nix or windows. Networks are the universal necessity. So you can't go wrong there. But like anything, you should learn how the Operating systems work. I would say, try to get some exp in fixing pc's. It will help you better understand the beast. I know people who code for the web.. but they haven't a clue how to operate or set up a webserver in it's basic form. It's kind of rediculous to perform a function for one thing and not be able to put it to work :)
