I love that space.com impact timer

    http://www.space.com/deepimpact/

I'v got a 7 day stop watch I'm gonna sync it with see if they cheat and if anyones up with me at the time pretend I did the math. :D

I was having a conversation about faster than light travel the other day an interesting fact came up,if a stationary grain of sand hit the front of a spaceship travelling at the speed of light it would explode with the power of a 20 kt warhead, massxspeed of light=freakin big bang

    :)

LOL. Well, it would be more than just that. The flyby craft will have a front row seat for observation, but as many telescopes as possible will be trained on it from down here too. Even if the front row pictures don't happen, they'll still get some useable data from the other observers, making it not a TOTAL loss. And if we're reduced to long range observation only, the bigger the splash the better.

Besides which, NASA is pretty good at getting everything possible from their missions. Remember the satellite that matched orbits with an asteroid, and orbited it getting pictures and data, and when the mission was over, they managed to soft-land it on the asteroid, despite the fact that it was never designed to land? Some extremely talented and versatile people working there.

I'll record the stream cause I won't be around when it happens.

I've seen some pretty amazing stuff on NASA-TV. I tuned in 2 days before the Colombia accident, I saw what was going on in the shuttle just hours before their fateful descent. I also watched the SCRAMjet test, which channel five made the mistake of broadcasting (what a waste of time, you really think the general public will have the patience to watch that sort of thing?). Very very cool.

They were going to send a Comet probe with a Kamikaze, suicidal Chimp in the nose cone, but the S.P.C.A. stoped them.

Now Bruce Willis has volunteered, as he's spent all his money he made in 'Armageddon'. The advertisement was for a space-trained Chimp. He thought it read "Space-brained chump"

Bah. Have to use RealPlayer. :(

Oh well, I'll hang for the duration, this should be neat. :D

I'm having better luck with WMP. Real-Player image was lousy.

    Heck yeah. :)

Whats the significance of shirt colour?

Not sure, but it looks like those that are actually involved in DOING it are in the blue shirts.

Or maybe they're all on the same JPS softball team. :D

  20. Sgt. Tibbs

    Sgt. Tibbs Ultra Geek

I got a "page cannot be displayed" error from the WMP link, so I'm stuck with the crappy RealPlayer image. :(

  21. Phantom

You've still got about 2 1/2 hrs to go before impact, according to local sources.

If ya don't have Real Player, you at least need the Real Player, or compatible codecs embeded into your current media player.

?? They're still talking about it as being on time, and they just did the second adjustment burn on the impactor, which is supposed to be about 1/2 hour before impact. My money is on 1/2 hour, not 2.5.

    Finally got WMP to work!!!!

    They're showing different things, though....

    Phantom Brigadier Britches

I could be wrong, but they were talking abot 3:45p.m., local time this morning. (We're at G.M.T. +8:00 hrs, b.t.w.)

  25. Sgt. Tibbs

    Sgt. Tibbs Ultra Geek

I think the RealPlayer feed is about 3 minutes ahead of the WMP feed.

    I lied. It's only about 1:15 ahead.

    G.T. R.I.P February 4, 2007. You will be missed.

They've got their numbers crossed. It's ~ 5 minutes from the final burn, which is 15 minutes from impact.

  27. Sgt. Tibbs

    Sgt. Tibbs Ultra Geek

How unfortunate that the person shooting the video didn't have a clue how to run his camera, so all we got to see was a black blob with periodic blue blobs. Coulda been creamed spinach on a kid's dinner plate, coulda been a comet colliding with a space shuttle...who would know?

  28. Sgt. Tibbs

    Sgt. Tibbs Ultra Geek

    See...now YOU got a good picture! :D

What bitrate are you receiving Sarge? I'm getting 144 Kb/sec feed, and the images are solid. And these are the raw images, which will get much better after processing. But they definitely nailed it.

Hi Star. Good thing you don't have to get up for work in a couple hours. :D

Gutsy move. The last burn they decided to change their targeting from dead center to near the bottom of the comet, so the flyby craft will get a better look at the crater as it goes under. Outstanding targeting at 23,000 miles per hour!

  32. Sgt. Tibbs

    Sgt. Tibbs Ultra Geek

Hell, I dunno. All I know is that on both RealPlayer and WMP it looked like spilled oil, and WMP lost the connection about ten seconds before impact. Of course, since it was a minute behind, it connected again before the impact "happened". Neither one of them was worth spit, though.

I'm sure there'll be good pictures forthcoming. :D

And now I can go to bed. http://instagiber.net/smiliesdotcom/cwm/3dlil/sleep.gif

They finally explained it. Red shirts are the impactor team, blue shirts are the flyby vehicle team.

Will be better images once they get cleaned up/processed, but for raw images these were pretty good.
