I have downloaded a .dat file on my desktop and can't find a way to open it. I've tried AVS Video Converter and I only get an error message that "the specified file contains no video data." I watched it online and the file has 64 mb so it must have captured the whole video. How can I convert this to an avi file I can play in VLC media player, or burn to a DVD? Please answer me at my main email address: <snip>

Thanks for any help you can give...

as far how to convert video dat files, ... maybe virtualdub might work

DAT files can also hold personal info much like cookies do... they can be both good and bad.

If you want to see inside them get a proggy called RegSeeker, its freeware and if memory serves me, it will also let you clean them out

try renaming it from file.dat to file.avi
sometimes they change the file name.

So? I was just asking...and it's not that hard to foil spam. If I was worried about that, I wouldn't have posted the address. Anyway, the question stands. I copied the dat file from a YouTube-like place and it won't open, it won't convert, it won't do anything. Changing the file extension doesn't work, burning it to a DVD in its present state and putting it in my DVR doesn't work. The associated icon looks like a Windows Media Player icon, but MP won't play it, neither will VLC media player. Any other ideas out there?

    Hi

Should be able to play it in latest Windows Media Player but depending on how the file was created it could be a number of formats as .dat files are not exculsively video formats, if its an mpeg which many are IIRC, then try backing up the file and then renaming its extention to .mpg, especially if you mouse over the file and it comes up as mpeg in the small balloon.

Already tried renaming it. Doesn't work. It is a video file, though. It's a copy of a report from a Russian TV channel. If I login to their site, they have an embeded player which plays the whole report in Windows Media Player, about twenty minutes worth. But although I can copy it out of my own computer's cache, it never opens with anything I try.

    What size is the file?

edit: i've just been told by a man with really thick glasses [so you know he is clever ] that you can "open" this file with "ISO BUSTER"?

    I dunno, it's worth a try.

The file is 64mb. I'll try the isobuster thing and post what the results are.

if the file is a video dat file (sometimes dat are just dat) use VCDGear from http://www.vcdgear.com/download.html
Convert dat -> mpeg then you can make it what ever else you want.
VCDGear is free and was a great tool for the short while that VCDs 'ruled' the world.
