    Well folks as the title states do you collect stamps and if so what is your most valuable stamp or interesting ones?

    I did collect stamps and still have an album I need to find from where I have stored it as today I was just looking at some valuable stamps and noticed I may well have some similar to those shown at the site I was looking at *Stanley Gibbons*

    Do you have any sites that list prices of stamps and if so please post them as I wish to at some point review the collection I have which will date back to the 1980s with stamps alot older than that date, could have a few penny lilacs and others.

    Hi Bazza

    But is that site just a storage type option, I'm after prices etc, dont need storage of them and not going to pay for any books on stamps as they may not give me the info I need, but thanks for the links anyways.

    I managed to dig out the album, and scan a few pages.

    Cheers for links, will look through them later, the job of trying to price these up is way down my todo list but its on it for a spare moment, yeah had a grandparent that used to travel those parts alot in engineering, a fair bit in Takoradi - Ghana etc which isnt that far away from Sierra Leone, so I'm sure he went there too, hence the stamps I have.

    The map shaped one I would imagine is a rare one, dunno if worth anything tho.

    That's the one that caught my eye, too. :)

    For earlier results, e.g ., auction, just change the "158"'s, in the links to "157", for auction details and prices. ;)

    Hi Bazza

    I managed to trace a bit of history of the Sierra Leone map stamp and its dated 1964 and there was a collection of a few that where called "Map and Lion" and mine is one of them, not tracked a price as yet.

    Found a few german stamps from the Reich are worth small amounts
    German Reich 1923 - 1 Million Mark = £2
    German Reich 1923 - 200 Mark overprint: 2 Millionen = £2
    German Reich 1923 - 5 Millionen Mark = £2

    Single stamps worth that, I gained them for nothing.... so £6 in 3 small stamps, makes me now think what the 400+ I have in the album are worth.

    Good site Bazza for current prices on many countries stamps HERE

    Antique stamps are great. I've got some collectible stamps from the early 1900's. ... I sold most of my 19th century stamps. .... Here's a pic of a nice cancelled USA "BlackJack" that I sold on the bay a while back. I don't recall what I got for it now;

    I'm also posting a couple of unused higher value US 19th century stamps that I sold for about $800;

    Hi

    That is a very nice looking and shaped one, any worth to it you know? I'm still out of the loop on prices of stamps in collections and have not yet still had my collection which is a few hundred old stamps valued.

    My father recently passed away and was a major stamp and coin collector. now I have somewhere in the area of 10,000 stamps and know nothing about them. Anyone have any idea's how I find the value of so many stamps. The coins seem easier because I can google the coins (still major google time)

    One of the best places to start is right in your local public library. Go to the catalog's section and ask a librarian to direct you to the "Scotts Catalog's" for collectible stamps. The catalog will allow you to identify the catalog identification number, which is the number that collectors use to refer to a particular stamp. .... The catalog will also provide a range of market prices according to the condition, "used or unused", "centering", "perforations", "glue or no glue", etc. of the particular stamp. (all these conditions go towards determining a particular stamps value, .. beyond the particular stamp at issue of course.).

    The catalog's prices are usually about twice to three times higher than you will actually be able to obtain in the collectors market. As a result, once you have obtained the catalog ID number for a stamp, and you have noted the catalog price, you may want to go to the collectible stamps area on ebay and search for auctions for that particular stamp. Find some listings and put them on your "Watch" list to see what they end up selling for. That will give you a pretty good idea of what the stamp's market value is. .. Of course this is not taking into account the different aspects or characteristics that go into assessing a particular stamps price. That is something that takes some time to learn, and in some cases can require a professional skill for finding such things as a "thin", which may only be visible under a philateslists viewing scope after immersion in special fluid. .... Professional philatelists are not very different from gemologists in that regard. If the stamps you have inherited are 19th century and or early 20th century stamps, you will want to take your time and research them carefully, as some may be extremely valuable. .... Note that in the front section of the Scott's catalog, you will find information that will explain some of these value determining factors for stamps.

    I would also advise you that if you decide to obtain an appraisal from a professional stamp dealer or two, ... be very careful in terms of who you trust. If you decide to sell, you could easily be swindled into selling your stamps for a lot less than they are worth. .... It can be very much worth your time to research and inform yourself before you go that route, and even then, be sharp and wary. Find someone who has proven themselves to be trustworthy. .................. Also, .. if you are ebay savvy, ... you will very often obtain a much better price on ebay than you will by selling to a dealer. Dealers naturally offer wholesale prices, while ebay will provide you with the opportunity to sell at retail prices. ... Of course if you are not familiar with ebay, then that is a whole other piece of knowledge that you will need to acquire, should you decide to go that route.

    Antique coins are also very comparable to gems in terms of what goes into determining value. Take the time to research and inform yourself before you go to selling. There are "Scott's" catalog's for coins also, but I have never used them. Don't rush to sell any collectible item before you have done your own due diligence to be well informed. It can make the difference between a lot of money made vs a lot of money lost.

    ... Also! ... make sure you keep the stamps stored properly so that they are not damaged in any way. You can google that info.

    Hope this info helps. .... I inherited a stamp collection myself a number of years ago and learned all of this the hard way.

    Note; ... As far as I know, the Scott catalog for coins is not published by the same outfit that publishes that stamp catalog. ... There are a number of different coin catalogs out there to use however.
